Whites M6, Whites Pulse Diver, ETRAC.
This is a 1655 Spanish Cob 1 Real, Potosi (Bolivia) mint, Pillars and Waves. I dug it about an hour ago (4:30 9/9/09)and am still shaking. This is by far the oldest coin I have found.
I left work early and decided to check out an area dating back to the mid 1600's in Mass, after getting permission from my fiancee' :-\. I began by digging mostly trash while being eaten alive by mosquitos. I decided to try a area of the beaten path. I was finding a lot of bullet shells, but no trash or pull tabs, which I found odd. I found some iron fairly deep and thought what am I doing detecting here, then next to a tree I got a solid signal on my whites M6. The screen read penny or dime. I dug a few scoops about 3 inches then tested the hole again and nothing. I knew I got the target. I grabbed some dirt and BAM!! there it was, silver. I was in shock and couldn't believe that it was real. I tried to detect more, but couldn't focus, so I hightailed it out and called my girl. I told her I'm heading home with what I think may be a very old coin. I picked up a couple of subs for dinner on the way home holding the coin tightly all the while. I arrived home with dinner, the coin and sweaty palms. Skipping eating, I jumped on treasurenet... and the site was down :icon_scratch:. My fiancee' thought this hobby was winding down, but its BACK ON folks.
Thanks for all the responses, I won't be sleeping tonight!!!!

Re: 1655 Colonial Spanish Cob 1 Real.

Thanks Don - I corrected my posts. Spelling never was my forte.

Garabaldi - you ought to keep hitting that site. Next time, it might be a Pine Tree Shilling.

Very nice find, but if you want to be proper, there is no such thing as 1 Reale. It is a 1 Real.
Don
Good call Don. I fixed the title. I don't know about anyone else, but I had Cob dreams all night, then got up at 4:15 thinking about the coin. Thanks for all your comments. Regardless how much this coin may be worth, banner or no banner the historical value is priceless to me. I agree with artorius 100%. ;D
It is wonderful  :headbang:

value=?????
If it makes banner=exciting
finding it and holding in your hand=PRICELESS!

"That is my goal, pine tree Shilling"

Ha! that's the right attitude old boy! After so many years I'm a firm believer that there's a bit of "dowsing" going on behind these fancy machine of our's. You start thinking about it, eventually you find "it" or find something just as fine!

Re: 1655 Colonial Spanish Cob 1 Real.

Thank you Dale. :icon_thumleft:

Congratulations on that great looking cob.

You gotta love detecting in Massachusetts where you are always just a beep away from finding a piece of history from the earliest days of our country.

Coins like yours are what we all search for. Being in New England certainly gives us an advantage in finding one. But, you still gotta put the coil over it. Great Job !!!!

It's looks like your finacee will be spending more time alone !!!!

Happy Hunting and see ya in the fields !!!!

Garabaldi,
Congrats on a very nice old spanish cob.

I found my first two spanish silver coins this year and one was a Spanish cob from the Potosi Bolivia mint but not as old. Mine is a 2 Reale from the late 1600s. It is now my avatar. I found it in Newark NJ at the beginning of a hunt. I tried to continue hunting but I could not focus so I had to leave.

I voted banner....I hope you make it.
