This is a 1655 Spanish Cob 1 Real, Potosi (Bolivia) mint, Pillars and Waves. I dug it about an hour ago (4:30 9/9/09)and am still shaking. This is by far the oldest coin I have found.
I left work early and decided to check out an area dating back to the mid 1600's in Mass, after getting permission from my fiancee' :-\. I began by digging mostly trash while being eaten alive by mosquitos. I decided to try a area of the beaten path. I was finding a lot of bullet shells, but no trash or pull tabs, which I found odd. I found some iron fairly deep and thought what am I doing detecting here, then next to a tree I got a solid signal on my whites M6. The screen read penny or dime. I dug a few scoops about 3 inches then tested the hole again and nothing. I knew I got the target. I grabbed some dirt and BAM!! there it was, silver. I was in shock and couldn't believe that it was real. I tried to detect more, but couldn't focus, so I hightailed it out and called my girl. I told her I'm heading home with what I think may be a very old coin. I picked up a couple of subs for dinner on the way home holding the coin tightly all the while. I arrived home with dinner, the coin and sweaty palms. Skipping eating, I jumped on treasurenet... and the site was down :icon_scratch:. My fiancee' thought this hobby was winding down, but its BACK ON folks.
Thanks for all the responses, I won't be sleeping tonight!!!!

Re: 1655 Spanish Cob.

Fantastic!!!!

The only cobs I come across still have the husks and the corn on them ;D

But seriously, it is nice to see some cobs coming from places other than the DelMarVa peninsula!

I hope to wake up tomorrow to find this on the banner!

Congrats!

I see your coin as fully as nice as the 2 Reales coin that just made the Banner

Well... I'll have to disagree with that, but it's all I'm going to say! ;D

Cobs rock!

Re: 1655 Colonial Spanish Cob 1 Reale.

While I concede that Garabaldi's coin is not as pretty as the 2R that made the Banner, mid-17th Century Spanish cobs are not as "pretty" as the later milled Spanish coinage. For a 17th Century cob, Garabaldi's coin is a very nice example.

My reasons for nominating this coin for the Banner are:

1. The age of the coin. A 17th Century cob is much rarer than an 18th Century piece - whether a cob or milled silver. Particularly as a find in New England.

2. The story behind the coin. This 1 Real was minted in 1655 at Potosi in Bolivia, Spanish America's boom mining town. From there it wound its way to some port on the Spanish Main, to be transported (by trade or piracy) to its ultimate destination of colonial Massachusetts. There it circulated among the early Puritans. Perhaps the coin was in the pocket of a Massachusetts soldier during King Philip's War. Perhaps Cotton Mather used it to buy a meal. Perhaps it circulated in Salem during the witch trials. Whatever it's travels, it certainly was witness to some fascinating early American history.

For me, the history of a coin - particularly one that travelled so far - is more important than it's value in today's numismatic market. And for history, and it's association with the Spanish Empire and 17th Century New England, I submit that this coin belongs on the Banner.

If the 2 reale makes it this cob definitely should! Banner!

I love mine! They're off the earliest sites I have here, what's not to like!

Re: 1655 Colonial Spanish Cob 1 Reale.

Very nice find, but if you want to be proper, there is no such thing as 1 Reale. It is a 1 Real.

Good call Don. I fixed the title. I don't know about anyone else, but I had Cob dreams all night, then got up at 4:15 thinking about the coin. Thanks for all your comments. Regardless how much this coin may be worth, banner or no banner the historical value is priceless to me. I agree with artorius 100%. ;D

Re: 1655 Colonial Spanish Cob 1 Real.

I know very little about cobs, you just don't find them in Bama. From what I've seen on T-Net for the last couple of years, this is a banner find. Any coin from 1655 found in America should be on the banner. My vote is in. :icon_thumright:
