Whites M6, Whites Pulse Diver, ETRAC.
This is a 1655 Spanish Cob 1 Real, Potosi (Bolivia) mint, Pillars and Waves. I dug it about an hour ago (4:30 9/9/09)and am still shaking. This is by far the oldest coin I have found.
I left work early and decided to check out an area dating back to the mid 1600's in Mass, after getting permission from my fiancee' :-\. I began by digging mostly trash while being eaten alive by mosquitos. I decided to try a area of the beaten path. I was finding a lot of bullet shells, but no trash or pull tabs, which I found odd. I found some iron fairly deep and thought what am I doing detecting here, then next to a tree I got a solid signal on my whites M6. The screen read penny or dime. I dug a few scoops about 3 inches then tested the hole again and nothing. I knew I got the target. I grabbed some dirt and BAM!! there it was, silver. I was in shock and couldn't believe that it was real. I tried to detect more, but couldn't focus, so I hightailed it out and called my girl. I told her I'm heading home with what I think may be a very old coin. I picked up a couple of subs for dinner on the way home holding the coin tightly all the while. I arrived home with dinner, the coin and sweaty palms. Skipping eating, I jumped on treasurenet... and the site was down :icon_scratch:. My fiancee' thought this hobby was winding down, but its BACK ON folks.
Thanks for all the responses, I won't be sleeping tonight!!!!

Re: Spanish Cob.

Wow thats a nice one. Congrats......

Re: Spanish Cob.

Looking at my Sedwick's Practical Book of Cobs, the only "Pillars and Waves" cob that would have both an "E" for the assayer and a "55" for the date is a 1655 issue of Potosi, Bolivia, Assayer = Antonio de Ergueta. Size looks to be a 1 Real. That is quite a find. A true "Golden Oldie"!

Be interested to know the state in which your coin was found. I am guessing it is one of the original 13 colonies, in view of the age of the coin.

Re: Spanish Cob.

artorius, how sure are you about this being 1655? That would be awesome. Thank you all for your comments.

Re: Spanish Cob.

Found it in Mass about 3 inches. Can anyone find a link to an image and source of the coin and date?
Anyone know what this could be worth?

Re: Spanish Cob.

I am very sure that it is a 1655 coin from Potosi.

You don't have to take my word for it, though. Dan Sedwick, the co-author of The Practical Book of Cobs, is one of the premier authorities in the world today on Spanish colonial coins. He has a website at http://www.sedwickcoins.com. If you contact Dan from his website and email him your photo, I am sure he will ID the coin for you. And if it is not a 1655 issue of Potosi, Bolivia, I'll eat my hat.

Re: Spanish Cob.

Here is a cob 1 Real from Dan Sedwick's website, with a date of 1665 rather than 1655. The coin is from his "Shipwreck Coins" selection, and was recovered from the wreck of the Consolacion (lost off Ecuador in 1681).

Other than replacing the "6" with a "5", it sure looks like your coin. Note the "E" in the upper right corner in both coins for the Assayer.

Re: Spanish Cob.

Artorius,
Thank you I emailed Daniel and he got right back to me and is authenticating it. He said you were right on the money. So what is the official title of the coin and how much do you think it is worth.

Re: Spanish Cob.

Nice 1 Reale cob dont find those to often. :icon_thumleft:

Re: 1655 Spanish Cob.

The official title of your coin is "Spain, Cob 1 Real, Assayer "E", Potosi (Bolivia) Mint, 1655".

I see your coin as fully as nice as the 2 Reales coin that just made the Banner, and accordingly I am nominating your coin for the Banner as well.

Re: 1655 Spanish Cob.

Ty artorius. You solved it. :hello2:
Thank you for the Banner Vote also. :icon_thumleft:

Re: 1655 Spanish Cob.

EXCELLENT FIND!!!! That looks like the REAL deal to me. Pass some of that stuff over to us in the western part of Ma. will Ya? I think this deserves the BANNER nomination! I'm sure you will have to put a story to it to be considered though. Part of the criteria. I'll nominate you now though. :notworthy: :headbang:

Re: 1655 Spanish Cob.

Well, I recieved confirmatin that it is genuine.
"Well it is 1 real, assayer E (Antonio de Ergueta) dated 1655. It is genuine and it is not the first time we have seen these type of cobs comming from that area, good find.
