I am looking at one of these that I may be able to get for less then $300.Is it worth it? I know it is an older model but it seems to have pretty good reviews. Mainly gonna use it for a wader around the outer banks. Any body have any hours on a 1280X that can give me a heads up about the pros and cons? I quite using Fishers a few years ago due to repair cost .I had an old CZ5 that I could not kill and then got a newer machine that I could not keep working. :dontknow:

If the 1280 works it will work well. It is an older machine, but is still a great detector for fresh water. Salt now it might get a little unstable in the wet sand where there is lots of black sand too. Settings are Volume as high as you like it. Disc low, like 1 or 2 but not 3 or higher if you hope to find gold rings. The white gold is better found with disc closer to 1. You don't really need a lot of sens. with the 1280. Install the batteries correctly, apply silicone grease to the gasket on battery door and clean any sand out of the coil cover and go have some fun. Best if it has the larger coil.

Thanks Sandman! I won the bid on a good working 1280X with a the larger coil and case for 204.00!! I am pretty stoked! :occasion14:

Congrats on the 1280-X. I still have two of them myself. Had 3 once but gave one to dumb brother in law. :laughing7:

sandman, the cz20 manual says "do not use silicon grease on battery compartment gasket" but to use a very light coating of petrolium jelly??????????????????
i was also wondering what i could/should use on the main gaskets to keep them from drying out????

This has got to be a mistake as petrolium jelly will deform rubber. Silcone grease is inert and I have been using it for years. Tesoro ships silicone grease with the water detectors. Divers use it all the time for the O rings in our regulators as it doesn't hurt the rubber.

thanks sandman :icon_thumright:

I will not be able to use it in untill June . Gonna try it out at Cape Code . I will have to play with it to find the best settings for salt water but as long as the sun is out it will be a good time.

wow!!!!!! birdman, you got a great deal!

I got pretty lucky on this one. It showed up in the mail a few days ago. :headbang:
