So we've been researching this site. We've been there before, but as I stepped out of the truck this morning things seemed to look different. I think different, because we've taken the time to read about the place. This is a large area and has seen folks around for many years, so we were hoping to find some older keepers.
First find in the keeper pocket was a buckle! Love to find these. I'll add it to my small collection for sure.

Next find was this neat brooch/pin....I am still cleaning on it.....

I find a broken buckle, and then a first for me. My first shield nickel!! :hello2:

I found this next...anyone know what it is?

Found a neat lock...

And Lisa found one that is soooo cool! It's in the shape of a heart. She also found her first V nickel. :icon_thumright: She hasn't sent me any pics yet. :-\
Found a 1912D wheat. Is the prettiest color of green and is cleaning up fairly well.

Don't know what this is, but thought it was something to take a second look at...

When did they make harmonica reeds out of lead? :icon_scratch: It's lead with the little brass/copper looking little something-or-others....
Found a toe tap, assorted lead (one's a lead seal) and other bits and pieces.
Last find of the day was a button. I had no idea what it was. I thought thru the crusty dirt I could see some initials, but didn't know what I had. When I got home, I was so nervous about cleaning it. Here's a pic with just brushing it lightly with a toothbrush....
100_0295.JPG
I started getting all fidgety and trying to read what it said. :D ACC? Does it say ACC? What's ACC? :icon_scratch: OH MY GOODNESS! I knew I needed to take my time and not totally ruin something that might be good. Remembered reading on one of BB's threads not to soak it in water if it's a two piece, so I got the toothpick out and got to cleaning. After what seemed like hours of picking at it, I got a few Q-tips and dampened them. Rubbed a bit more of the dirt off and here's what it looks like....
100_0316.JPG
I can read the word 'Waterbury' on the back..and there's something else there, but I can't make it out.

Happy dance occurred in the den, at my desk, looking thru a magnifying glass with a toothpick in one hand and the button in the other.

Have a great week!!

Nana,
I'm headed to work right now, but I can't wait to get home and look at you finds again and see what that ACC button is. Congrats to you both on a super hunt. I think that whatsit may be one of these I spotted in Crouch's CW relics book. It says it's a "music holder that attached to instruments." What do you think? :icon_scratch:
Back later,
MM

Got to get up "earlier" in the morning to beat that Doug feller.....He's right Nana, music holder.Congrat's on some way cool relic's,I'd be hitting that spot for a long time. The button look's like it should clean up pretty good.Try using some naval jelly with a good rinsing and then dipping just the front of the button in lemon juice for around 10 sec.'s with another good rinsing.....should "pop" any guilt on it right out.Excellent find....WTG :hello2:

Great finds and that Alabama cadet corps button is a Excellent find .

Bill

Congrats on that first shield nickel.....research paid off! You have a nice old site there , looks like one of those places you can keep going back to ......WTG :icon_thumleft:

Keep on Digging! John

MM,

You must've played an instrument in high school. :) You hit that ID of the lyre dead on.

Nana,

Some aluminum jelly will help that button to shine. It seems to have some gold gilding left, and it is one heck of a find. A BIG congratulations on your first shield.

That is the perfect example of one to test with peroxide first. It will remove the harder crud, but if let air dry (no rinsing) will keep the patina, and most importantly show if there's enough gilt to use something like the jelly. If you go straight to a harsh cleaner, you risk there not being much gilt (once the patina is gone, it's gone), and you also probably won't get 100% of the green off. The peroxide is safe, and will do most of the work.

PS... Doing it that way might also give a very nice green and gold button as a result.

Great hunt you had, the shield and button are sweet looking. :icon_thumright:

very nice finds, are you digging alot of trash with these ? keep up the great work and thank you for sharing.

Wow some nice stuff. The harmonica reed is made out of zinc.
The ACC can be Alabama Cadet Corps but can also Albany Citizens Corps from New York. They can be civil war or later. You will have to be able to make out the backmark to know for sure. If it says Waterbury button co. only it is post civil war. If it has Waterbury button co Extra and has a rope design around the shank it is slightly post civil war but is it has Waterbury button co without the rope design it is civil war period. The backmark is a Scovill mark with Waterbury You will have to clean it so you can see the whole mark. If the button is civil war it books for $125 to $250 if it's later it's worth quite a bit less
Either way it isn't a button you dig everyday.

Nana you always come up with something good. Congradulation on the coin. I've never found one of them. Sure would like to. You have a great assontment of find. I really like that button. Congradulation on the finds, and HH......
