Some Finds From An Excavation Site I've Been Hunting

Since I'm new here I'm sure most of you haven't heard about the excavation site I've been surface hunting with the permission of the owner. This site is a Ft Ancient village that was excavated years ago but still has tons of artifacts on it. The owner and an Archy have been digging there for over a year and I got permmission to surface hunt the dirt they throw behind them after it rains. They aren't screening the over burden as they dig and are missing quite a few small pieces like Shell Beads, Bone Beads, Arrowpoints, Bone Tools, etc. Here are some pictures of what I've been finding along with a few in situ pics of some of the better finds.

The first two pics are the trays I have filled up in the past year.

The next two are what the site looks like.

The rest are some in situs of some of the finds.

Was this a cannel coal piece???? Looks drilled in the pic

I saw that in the picture too. I think it was a Deer Toe though. I hope it wasn't a Cannel Coal Pendant I missed. Ouch!!!

The funny thing about this site is that when people surfaced hunted it years ago when it was plowed there were numerous Cannel Coal Pendants found in the field, but one was never found in any of the excavations that have occured. Strange, huh?

Re: Some Finds From An Excavation Site I've Been Hunting

Yeah that is a nice site and a nicer arrangement you got there Dorkfish. Hunt it till it is gone for sure

Where ye at? What state?

The Cannel Coal Pendants that we find come from Ft Ancient sites and are from 950 to 1650 AD.

Re: Some Finds From An Excavation Site I've Been Hunting

Dorkfish, love that black dirt! Here in Pa some of the deer toes from Monongahela sites are drilled on the top so look them over. Keep us informed.

Rege-PA, yeah I have a few of those myself. We call them Tinklers.

Here is one I found yesterday. The 1st pic is the days haul and the 2nd is the Deer Toe showing the hole drilled in the top.

Do you mean the oblong round pieces or the two round pieces in that last picture? If you mean the oblong round pieces, those are Bone Beads. The two round pieces in the last picture are crude stone discs, or Discoidals, and they are game stones. I find quite a few crude ones on this site that were just started to be polished, like those two, and I also have some very nice ones that are completely finished. Some of them are even decorated or drilled in the center.

Here's some pic of a few more.

What percentage of the disks you found are ceramic vs. stone? It looks like there is some of both-

Hi Dorkfish,
Welcome to the Forum,You have access to a very populated Ft. Ancient site. Those are some excellent finds. Sites obviously undisturbed for some time are rare today with so many people taking upthe hobby. I live in the Ohio valley bordering the Ohio river and Kentucky.I love to hunt Ft. Ancient sites. You have a very impressive collection there my friend.

Cannonman17, out of the 36 I have posted above 10 of them are made from Pottery and the others are either sandstone, granite, or some other type of stone. I have about 25 or so others that are crude that I didn't get pictures of and only 5 of them are made from Pottery, so I guess out of the 60+ that I have only around 15 of them(25%) are Pottery and the rest are stone.

Re: Some Finds From An Excavation Site I've Been Hunting

:o Hooooly smoke!! I think your doin' better than the archies!!!
I had always thought those guys did a better job at screening and sifting....
Thats one heckuva display there and super nice artifacts!! I dont know much about Ft. Anceint though. They came after the Hopewell right?
