Some Finds From An Excavation Site I've Been Hunting

Since I'm new here I'm sure most of you haven't heard about the excavation site I've been surface hunting with the permission of the owner. This site is a Ft Ancient village that was excavated years ago but still has tons of artifacts on it. The owner and an Archy have been digging there for over a year and I got permmission to surface hunt the dirt they throw behind them after it rains. They aren't screening the over burden as they dig and are missing quite a few small pieces like Shell Beads, Bone Beads, Arrowpoints, Bone Tools, etc. Here are some pictures of what I've been finding along with a few in situ pics of some of the better finds.

The first two pics are the trays I have filled up in the past year.

The next two are what the site looks like.

The rest are some in situs of some of the finds.

Yeah, Ft Ancient followed the Hopewell people and we find some Hopewell points in there occasionally. There is a Hopewell mound right across the flood plain about a mile away called the Tremper Mound that was loaded with artifacts.

Here's a few links on Tremper Mound that you might find interesting. The Pipes that came from Tremper were just phenomenal.

:o Hooooly smoke!! I think your doin' better than the archies!!!
I had always thought those guys did a better job at screening and sifting....
Thats one heckuva display there and super nice artifacts!! I dont know much about Ft. Anceint though. They came after the Hopewell right?

I think that often times young, inexperienced archaeologists are looking for the older habitiation artifacts.. always looking for the find of the century, for the missing link so to speak between this, that, and the other thing. So, in the process they sometimes start excavations in overdrive. If they think the site has been plowed once a hundred years ago they might bring in heavy equipment to remove the top foot... heaven forbid they find something out of context.. I don't agree with that practice but it does happen. Sometimes they are just in a rush to get to the older levels of even an udisturbed site and will have the people who are actually doing the digging go at a much faster rate that what would be sound archaeological practice, some might not even sift the top layers... all bunk, but in the end it makes for good leftover hunting for collectors if access to the site can be gained.
