Re: results 1 tank of gas 3" dredge n. ga.

I'm a complete novice at this kind of stuff so forgive the stupid question. But approximately how much would that much gold be worth?

Well partner, my heart is out west but the rest of me is in Louisville Kentucky.
Mapquest says I am only 6 hours and 45 minutes away from you. just a little over 400 miles.
The picture of me in my avatar was taken last year in North Carolina during one of my rockhounding trips.

I come down to Ga to prospect about twice a year. My son lives in Columbus Ga. I was planning to come down the last week of Aug., but now I am getting ready to open a business in southern Indiana so I may not get away for a while.

How much would that much gold be worth? Well I always think of it like this.

#1 The adventure is a mini vacation from civilization.
#2 I get some great exercise.
#3 I have a hoot of a good time with my hunt en partners.
#4 We always bring the food that WE like to eat . ( not left overs )
#5 We are out with mother nature and her critters.
#6 How much is the gold worth? :icon_sunny: PRICELESS

Would need to weigh it to be sure.
But money wise......my estimate 1-2 dwt (pennyweight) = $50 - $100

1 dwt = 1.5 grams
28 grams to an oz. 1 oz today = $943.00

$943.00 divided by 28 = $33.68 per gram. 1dwt = $50.52

As you can see it ain't about the money, so like the man said..........priceless :headbang:

Re: results 1 tank of gas 3" dredge n. ga.

best way to put it.

Re: results 1 tank of gas 3" dredge n. ga.

Thanks for putting a general price on the amount of gold found. I'm not trying to belittle what anyone decides to do with their spare time. Heck, I'd love to be able to spend a day out in the great outdoors and make $50-$100 doing it. That sure beats paying $40 to hit a little white ball around a course and getting angrier by the minute!

But in a way it IS about the money to a certain extent. I can find all kinds of ways to keep myself busy. This includes just general metal detecting where I would typically make much less than $50 per day (but with a lot less work). So for me I'm trying to decide if I want to jump into a new hobby or not. And if I'm going to be doing gold prospecting then I'm certainly going to want to see some possibility of making a profit otherwise I'm going to choose a hobby that is less work. :) And in Ohio, gold prospecting appears to be a LOT of work for the return. So I was just trying to get a general ballpark estimate of how much strickman might be making for the amount of time he spends.

Thanks for the info!

You are right about the work! If I was doing it for the money then I would be better off with a part time job at Mickey D's. But I caught the fever a few years back when I panned my first color, and now I have to find gold every chance I get, and when I'm not out hunting gold, then I'm thinking about hunting gold. I even wrote a poem about it.

Gold Fever
by GoodyGuy~

I've a sickness that can't be cured
And a fever that can't be broken

I must find gold or as feared
I'll burst and I'm not joke'n

The only thing that'll fulfill my dream
and keep me from gettin' old

Is bein out there on any ol' stream
and pannin' some precious Gold

I'll hunt and pan and sluice all year
and when the truth be told

The only cure that I'll hold dear,
is when I hit that motherlode.

Hi Goodyguy,
Last time I checked, it was 31.1 grams per oz.

Re: results 1 tank of gas 3" dredge n. ga.

28 grams is a dealers ounce, gold should be 31 (troy) ounce

Ok revised math below. :tongue3:
I mistakenly used avoirdupois oz. in above post.

Would need to weigh it to be sure.
But money wise......my estimate 1-2 dwt (pennyweight) = $45 - $90

1 dwt = 1.5 grams
31.10 grams to a troy oz. 1 oz today = $943.00

$943.00 divided by 31.10 = $30.32 per gram. 1dwt = $45.48

GG~

PS. Thanks for the correction but, don't tell the guy I have been selling my gold to. :icon_thumright:

Re: results 1 tank of gas 3" dredge n. ga.

Re: results 1 tank of gas 3" dredge n. ga.

As to making money finding the gold. Again another memory of my dad and my teenage years prospecting with him. Anyway I remember us running across a man and his wife trying to make a living at gold prospecting. Anyhow the guy had a rough day not even a half an ounce for a full day at work. I remember pops telling the guy don't quit your day job until you find the "Motherlode." I asked him what he meant by that. He told me to keep your job and keep this as a hobby that has benefits.
