As to making money finding the gold. Again another memory of my dad and my teenage years prospecting with him. Anyway I remember us running across a man and his wife trying to make a living at gold prospecting. Anyhow the guy had a rough day not even a half an ounce for a full day at work. I remember pops telling the guy don't quit your day job until you find the "Motherlode." I asked him what he meant by that. He told me to keep your job and keep this as a hobby that has benefits.

If I could get anywhere near a half ounce a day I would definitely quit my day job! :icon_thumright:

I'm a complete novice at this kind of stuff so forgive the stupid question. But approximately how much would that much gold be worth?

Would need to weigh it to be sure.
But money wise......my estimate 1-2 dwt (pennyweight) = $50 - $100

1 dwt = 1.5 grams
28 grams to an oz. 1 oz today = $943.00

$943.00 divided by 28 = $33.68 per gram. 1dwt = $50.52

As you can see it ain't about the money, so like the man said..........priceless :headbang:

GG~

With the price of gas an a cup of coffee, its gotta be the thrill of the hunt and the fresh air

Very interesting topic. As I am mostly a relic hunter and just getting into gold panning my question is, where would you sell found gold if you wanted to? I realize that most don't sell their finds, as I don't with Civil War relics, but with people paying $5000 over retail for a Minelab 4500, they must plan on finding enough to make some money on it. Plenty of places buy scrap gold, but who buys prospected gold? Thanks.

Nice gold Strickman, I guess you'll have to stick to private property if you want to dredge. Hopefully Ca. will let us dredge in the future. Just keep bugging your congressman. Jimmygoat

your secret is safe. ::)i can't bring myself to sell mine-to much hard work in it.i save it up and melt the small stuff down to make pendants.
Instead of melting it down, trade up to gold coins... 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1 oz. That way you have turned an unkown value to a truly recordable amount... accepted worldwide. Just a thought. TTC

Re: results 1 tank of gas 3" dredge n. ga.

name a "hobby" that can pay you back some $$$ --other than gold panning /metal detecting or treasure hunting in general --most stress break --"hobbies" cost money and have 0 chance of making any kind of cash return on your "investment"

Re: results 1 tank of gas 3" dredge n. ga.

i would rather, not have a recordable amount. i can get more for finished jewelry.but then again i am not into this for the money. if that was the case i would have give it up years ago.

Re: results 1 tank of gas 3" dredge n. ga.

like i said - just about all hobbies as a rule "lose" all or most of the money put into them , and while metal detecting / treasure hunting or gold panning --also "lose" money in general -- theres often is some fiscal return possible --with the odd chance of a really nice hit $ wise -- however if done solely for the money -- its seldom "profietible" -- however the "good times" spent outdoors having fun is a reward in its self that surpasses mere fiscal worth -- some folks know the fiscal ""value" of everything , but the true "worth" of nothing......

I totally agree! Field & Stream figured the cost of a pound of fish caught by yourself was at about (as I remember from the 70's article) 78 dollars. TTC
