Went on a road trip today to get some detecting in.
About 60 miles across country to the permissions.
6 sites were planted in winter wheat.
2 sites in a 1 foot plow, and 1 site partially cropped.

So first target after 30 minutes 1867-1967 penny
20231105_084444.jpg

I said that needs to a 100 yrs older.
1.5 hrs later the next target I finally justified in taking a photo.
A saw nut

I got tired of plow row detecting so I went on a corn stubble field, found what was a big ash layer down 6" and over a large foot print.
Probably a barn that burnt down.
So between the saw nut and this buckle was another 2 hrs.
I was thinking this is a hard day for no really good keepers.

Few minutes later this item, a tie pin of sorts?

Then a button

Crushed thimble

The next one I thought it only takes one to make a hunt.
Beautiful bell

Little did I know that 10 minutes later life would so great!
Solid 80 on the Deus ll
I thought gee a coin would be nice.
Dug the plug saw the edge-and for next few minutes I just looked at it and said NO WAY!
I looked away looked down and said it again No Way.
I must of repeated this 10 times.

Full Sovereign - weight
7.9 grams, 22.05mm in
diameter with a Fine
Gold content 7.32
grams.

150 yrs of being rolled around in the field.
She's only been kissed on the cheek.
I'm too excited, too tired to clean anything up.
But will tomorrow and post the other stuff.
Perfect day!.

The clasps buckle pieces all were in on hole.

In the other finds picture you can see the backside with leather still attached.

So the what is this pile of ?.
7 hrs of digging produced one misplaced penny 🤔
Cool door handle, the buckle/clasp set, saw nut, 2 decorative brass and the smallest umbrella slide yet.
Though all 3 have signs of being in heat/fire.
Crush thimble, D buckle,
button and decorative tie clip or ?
The bell and pieces of brass.

Congrats on the fantastic banner ..... or as they say ..... a golden thread !!
Thanks Bart
Woke up and there it was-kind of surreal digging it and getting it up there also.
Then coming from a man that's carrying nearly a 6 pack of them you know all too well I imagine.

Congratulations on making "Banner". Rightfully so.

Yes I really sucked up the feeling (Just between us-it took the eyes a moment to clear also-got a tad misty out we'z might say in all honesty)
We had a political scandal about money and R/Roads, and the actual collapse started in 1873 as the history reads.
But probably what is written and the daily needs of a regular folks was different.
This gold coin was minted in Sydney Australia.
Anyone in their right mind would get a little misty-eyed, my friend.

Thanks for the history from the period and for the country of origin.
(I missed seeing that it was Austalia. Oopsie!)

Here's a link to your coin on Numista for anyone interested in the history of the coin.

I sincerely would like to thank everyone that has taken the time to responded, and those that voted it up to make up onto the Banner.
Just would like to add to the thread that today after a few phone calls to other permissions I was given a number that supplied the cell number to the permission where I found the gold coin.
I called up and we had a great chat about the family history, the land, and of course I told him what I recovered.
I told him I was going to give them 1/2 of the gold value for the coin.
He was impressed with my honesty of even telling them, and asked if I could forward a picture so he could show his Dad.
Promptly sent the photos of the coin and the bell over to him.
"It's not like we'd ever go out there and look for anything, and you are so welcome to it all" :hello2:

I asked about another site that I had seen, and he gave me the owners phone number, and to give him as a reference, (1000 acre permission must have some influence)
I called up the other gent, told him the Coles Notes on what I like to do.
I mentioned one tract of land he bought from my other permission.
He responded: "Did you know there was a school house on that field?"
Yup
"Well I'll be around harvesting till the end of the month still, so please drop around to my home, and we'll have a chat.
( I'm thinking 3 weeks of harvesting yet to go-big land owner)
I do know that there are at least a dozen home sites on just one road, that my permission stated he owned the land.

I hold my permissions in high regard, and honesty is paramount.
Granted some will read this and think that the farmer would never know, slip in the pocket, and everything is good.
I guess my way of thinking has me nearly 10,000 acres of welcomed permissions.
