Here is a halted knife found by a plumber digging a sewer line near the St. John's River in Seminole County.

A sharp arrow can impale an animal where you can't get it, such as up a tree. Whereas a blunt arrow shot with the directed force of a bow can kill the animal by breaking it's spine or other blunt force damage.

Blunts... This is the way they were used, as taught to me by my grandfather back in the 60's.

I've never found a small arrowhead blunt personally. I've never been one to believe the blunt theory. My thoughts were they went for medium to large game; maybe some smaller (like bobcat size). I worked for animal control when I was younger and I've seen both cats; and especially dogs not get phased by stun guns and batons. It's hard for me too see a blunt rock doing much. Maybe animals like birds, squirrels or some other type of rodent but why go for that when there's more food for bigger kills.

In the book “Nine Years Among the Indians” Herman Lehmann describes using blunt arrows. "I was given a shield and placed about fifty yards. Four braves took bows and blunt arrows and began to shoot at me.” He later describes using blunt arrows and arrows with “spikes” on them. I don’t know if this is referring to bunted wooden shaftes only or blunted points. But they did use arrows without sharped points. This was referring to the Apache and later Comanche tribes btw. I listened to the audio book a little while ago and remember hearing references to blunted arrows.

All the ones we find predate the actual arrowhead I’m sure they were used like a knife for something we may never know. I’ve found some scrapers on Mississippian sites and they are always ovals and small. I’ve found some oblong and thick but would of been used in hand.

That's why I can't get on board with the whole stunner(blunt) thing.

I was told this is a clay. Found in southwest Georgia. I think I have some more hafted scrapers and maybe a blunt but will have to go through all 3 of my frames to look for them.

perhaps in this case, the way he is described them being used, blunts meant something tied to the end (think tiny punching bag). In other words, arrows almost like counting coup.
