You know where I'm going with this one!

What do ya think? I found this next to the creek at the barn site same day as I found the Indian.

Sounds like 1/2 of a coin when I drop it! ;D

:P Just wishful thinkin? :P

Merry Christmas!!

Re: You know where I'm going with this one!

Good find. probably is a portion of a coin as they used to clip them years ago, like making change today from a dime, but they clipped'em.

Re: You know where I'm going with this one!

Hmm, not a silver coin but could be a nickel or large cent? Neat find Nana!

Re: You know where I'm going with this one!

Put baby powder on it then tap the edge of coin to remove access powder and look for designs or letters with a loop. I thought they usually only clip gold and silver coins for change and that was a long time ago in Rome when they did that.

Keep @ it and HH!!

Re: You know where I'm going with this one!

They use to cut silver coins back in the colonial days (that is where the term "bit" comes from, two bits, four bits, etc.) to use as change, but not gold and as far as I know of not copper either, as they had the fractional coins (1/2 cent). Once in a while on the forum you see someone finding a bit coin.

Re: You know where I'm going with this one!

Nana that is fabulous! I'd be looking for the rest of it too! I once found a half of a "clad" penny in a park on the soccer field (around the edge where people sit) I kept looking and found the other half about 3 feet away. I figured the lawnmower got it! I've got both halves. Your's is a much better coin and if it's there.... I bet you can find it!

Re: You know where I'm going with this one!

Probably a Clppped Half cent by size.

Congrats !

Re: You know where I'm going with this one!

Definetly looks like a early copper someone clipped! I would be using osme coin conditioner on that and the IH cent!

Re: You know where I'm going with this one!

Just what I wanted to hear! Thanks yall! ;D

Hey capt....it worked....didn't find one of those!

Jake...where do I purchase coin conditioner?

;)

Re: You know where I'm going with this one!

It is sold as Blue Ribbon Coin Conditioner, its a must for dug coins if you want to make the details show! Also good for copper/brass relics you dig up. You can get it from many online coin shops, ebay, or your local coin store, just google it and you should be able to find it:)

HI. our US coinage is based upon clipping, ? The Mexican 8 REALES was more used in the US ?as a coin than the American ones were. It has been conceded that what Washington allegedly threw across the Potomac river was a Dobie - 8 Reales ?coin.

Because of the scarcity of small change, ?it was legal to cut an 8 Reales (8 bits) in half and ended up with two- 4 bit pieces, cut again and you had four- 2 bit pieces. ?Sound familiar? this practice was carried out up to the late 1800's.

The coins in the picture are 8 Reales - ?they are in uncirculated condition from a cache - ?they measure 1 ?1/2 " in diameter - I found 250 in the cache of ?uncirculated coins ?

I have since given all but 2 away to serious collectors that appreciated them.

Sorry pointy hat capt Ossumier, you are too late.

(Doing my best grumpy old man imitation) - Hmmph. That was back in the good old days when one eighth of a cent would really buy something! Hmmph. ;D
