My grandparents are moving to a smaller house and I’ve been getting things here and there. I was recently given this. I’m told as a kid my grandpa dug it out of a burn pile next to a barn, had to have been some time in the late 30’s
I currently live on the property where he found it so in a way it’s came back home, I don’t know anything beyond that.
There’s no markings or anything, I don’t know how old it is or what was in it could been whiskey could have been bleach.
You guys nailed the inkwell maybe you could help me here too.

I’d say that’s about right... I guess they were serious about their drinking back then, I’m guessing 2 gallons

Heck, when you only get into town every four months two gallons hardly cuts it.

There's a song titled "Old Brown Jug", I don't know who wrote it or sung it but it goes back a-ways. I agree with the other guys - it probably held homemade whiskey (moonshine) or rum or even hard cider or maybe it was used to store well water for the young-uns. Nice heirloom.
