Wow that crystal is really something

Dang you find them in the dirt and laying on top. You are one lucky man.

After walking around in the weeds for three hours I was a happy man also . The sun was low on the horizon and the shadows long and I had the bead a rough slate point and some brokes so the skunk was off . But I needed one for framing .

Your crystal gem points are awesome…I'm curious about what era/age do you place these items? I have looked at Overstreet at the Pacific Northwest stuff and this point and most of your others are true arrowheads…right? Awesome finds!

thanks that Gunther is a arrow point they may appear around A.D. 800 but probably later and up into the historic periods and yes I find a lot of true arrow points but plenty of Dart Points from late paleo to archaic all from the same camp .

Forgive my ignorance here but what would be the definition of a dart versus a spear? When did the use of bow and arrow appear? Sorry if this isn't the place to ask but I've only been into artifacts for a couple of years and am trying to educate myself.

Depends on where in North America we are talking about.

Assuming everyone is on the same page, we know that a 'land bridge' once linked modern-day Alaska to Siberia, and thus enabled our first inhabitants to make their way here.

Generally speaking, the American Indian started utilizing the bow between 4000-1500 B.C. in the Alaskan/Northern Canadian locale.

As they migrated, archeological & lithic analysis has shown the first emergences of the bow in the American south/midwest around 600-700 AD, in the American southeast at around 700 AD, and in the western United States around 200-500 A.D.

To answer your other question, a 'dart' was an intermediary form of projectile that bridged the gap between the most primitive and manually driven 'spear' and the highly advanced arrow delivered via bow.

A dart was mechanically driven by means of a cupped or notched thrower - the aboriginal 'atlatl' being the popular example.

Thank you. We're atlatl used across the entirety of North America? I have collector friends who claim they have arrowheads that are several thousand years old.

Yes, the atlatl had similar range.

I'd guarantee that your friends DO have 'arrowheads' thousands of years old...

I'd also bet they are dumb-dumbs who haven't been educated and brought up to speed that the accepted vernacular is "projectile point" which encompasses spear, dart, arrow points.

So now you are suited to ask them if they have 'points' generically or 'arrowheads' specifically that are several thousand years old! Haha!

Happy hunting!
