I was going to say almost the exact same thing as fortbball9

I've got to say I did not see the copy the first time I saw this. This would have been a great treasure story if it were real and part of the lost Confederate mint that never has been found. I still like it and it makes a great story to tell. Nice find.

A Thrill is always worth it. Congrats.....

Should have been easy to figure out since the confederates never made gold coins......Kane 23

Crushed dreams huh? Kidding, I would have had a heart attack seeing that in the ground. Found a gold colored Mexican coin once that had my heart racing. Still, a great find!

Sorry we don't all share your prolific knowledge of Confederate coinage.

Sorry bout it being a copy but hey thats my Bro he is good at yankin carpet out from under you lol I think its stil a cool shiney dont be bumed :icon_thumright:

Looks like someone was trying to "pull a fast one" on you by planting a replica at an old cellar hole...I wonder who would have done that...

I'd want to punch him in the face though ;D >:( >:( ::)

Cool find :icon_thumright: Is the coin gold or gold plated? Appear to be in great condition.

According to this link in 1861 Edward Elmore sent a letter to the CSA Secretary of the Treasury showing this design. No examples of the $5 nor $20 coin are known to exist. So this coin copy in a way could be considered "original".

Why such a snide remark? The man was just stating a simple FACT. Plus, even with MY bad eyesight, the word "copy" was not hard to see. :icon_scratch:

How do you know his remark was "snide". He could have been joking with kane23. And how does kane23 know the confederates never made coinage since he was born at least a hundred years after the civil war ended. Everyone has heard the stories about buried confederate gold. Maybe they buried it all. Maybe that's the reason none has ever been found. The FACT is, no one knows. This is a very nice find and kinda rare as you don't see them very often. I would loved to find one. Copy or no.

Randy

Just look in the Redbook, the confederates only made examples of cents and half dollars, both extremely rare. Of course if you saw the movie Sahara, you might think otherwise. Confederate gold that was hidden was old US gold...Kane 23
