You're right. Markers validate the pressence of burried treasures. But it must be found along the way till you reached the object. External markers indicate the location or spot of the object. Markers underneath will lead you to the object, and that validates that you are on the right track to the object.
Most if not all external markers no longer exist or have been tampered which make it unreliable.
In Zambales area, markers are made (almost original) based on circulating written signs and symbols, and are used to lure financiers and treasure hunters alike.
