Lisa and I got out for a bit of hunting this week. Was quite chilly but bearable. (mid 30's) We end up looking for a site that's on the back side of some property we have permission to hunt. We were never able to access this site before, as it's in a very thick stand of trees and briar's.

We get to where we think we should start out and to our surprise, see someone has cut us a route! Lucky us! 8)

We find the site we're looking for, but discover something we've never come across before....

Can you believe that! Frozen dirt in Alabama? :icon_scratch: We've never had to experience such. :D Reminded me of a couple of years back when we were having a drought. Like trying to pry thru concrete. :-X
Ya'll would'a got a good laugh at us had you seen all that icy dirt flying around. When we did manage to get to a target, it was wrapped in a nice package of frozen dirt....and I soon found blobs of mud in my pocket as they slowly thawed. :-X :D It was rather difficult digging, but we had fun.
Here's my prize keepers from this site....
unreadable date wheat
1886 Injun
buttons
bullets
1/2 of a heart locket
cover to a lock?
a round lead disc

Lisa found a 1905 Injun and a great token!

I can now truly sympathize with those of you that have these digging conditions for more than a couple of days!

Nana, were you having problems with that dirt? LOL
I tried to dig a little this week and it's still frozen about 4 inches down
makes it real tough to recover those finds
but, you guys look like you had a good day

Oh yes.. very very familiar with trying to dig in frozen dirt. Frozen woochips, frozen pea gravel, frozen leaves and grass. Yup.. now you know why all those metal detectorists who live in more northern climes lament winter so much. .. and long for the warmer days of Spring, Summer and Fall even.

Glad you gals had fun!

That round lead disk could be a toy coin. This past summer I found one that was an 1845 large cent
impressed on obverse and reverse on the lead slab. Obviously the image was reversed on the lead.
Somebody told me kids used to do this as a joke back then.
Cool though.

nice finds Nana and i have no idea what dirt ice is. :laughing9: :laughing9: :laughing9:

tinpan from sunny side down ;D ;D ;D

Nana, you are a hard core treasure hunter! :headbang:

Hey Girl, I hear ya! Our ground froze, but our major issue wasn't digging up treasures. It was getting down and up the driveway, especially when it all thawed! Talk about a MESS! The danged stuff EXPANDED and I had to go and buy a pickup and park my Camry at the office. No way to get it in there now; may be April before the Camry sees the homebase again! Our son and his family came to visit last week. When the thaw hit, they promptly got stuck at one point in their new Avalanche, which the son swore would never happen. After he decided he could overcome this, he went out into the woods, got sticks and limbs, and worked his way out. I raised him right!

Thank goodness for sunshine and wind to dry things up! By the way, great finds and guts! - Noodle

Just shows how tough Bama ladies are !Goin and diggin in the frozen tundra :laughing7: Well at least you came home with some very cool finds! Can not wait til the thaw! :icon_sunny:

Our ground is nice a soft. Only trouble is that there is a foot of snow on top of it!

LOL! Here too. The snow has been shrinking some, but I hear there is more winter weather on the way.

Nice looking site Nana. I may have to head South one of these winters for an MD'ing vacation.

:D Thanks, ya'll!

Randy...I hope we don't have to deal with frozen dirt on a regular basis. :P :D But I'll sure be looking for that digger you're working on.

RM...we'll go back to that site soon and give it a good going over. Everything should be back to normal by now. Rain all weekend and temps back up into the 60's.

NOT caveman MM....cavewoman! :tongue3: :D

HCW...that would probably be the only way I'd find a LC here. :P :D It does have writing on it, but I can't make out what it says. :-\

:o Noodle! I'll never forget slipping and sliding down that driveway! :D Charlie's like, "No worries, we have 4WD." Yeah, well...I was holding on tight! :D

Thanks for all the great comments. I'm going to check out a new site today. Maybe we'll find something good.

Nana

I was laughing at your video, Alden had to come see what was so funny. Say's you're a tough woman, wants to know if you need the backhoe for a few? Then he remembered that's how we haul hay to the cows. So that leaves the backhoe out. Just go to the hardware store and get a flaming torch, that will thaw out the layers where you can dig easier. Just a thought!!

Great finds as always!

Hey we're hitting near 70 tomorrow. Yippee :hello2:

 RR

Nice Video........You need a small pic - axe! I think that will do the job............Still looks like you have some nice finds anyway. WTG

You go girl. Nice finds. We went dirt fishing 3 days and it was 21 degrees every morning. The third day the ground was frozen for a little while in the morning which is something we don't normally have in Louisiana. I have to feel sorry for our friends in the north in the winter. I know why they can't wait for the spring!!

Steve ;D

:D Yes...that was an experience I hope won't come around too often. It rained the weekend after and the digging went back to normal. :D This past week was perfect temps for hunting. I hope it stays around for a bit more.

Thanks, ya'll!! Nana
