Received these items years ago as a kid from a WWII veteran. I can't remember the story, but I think he might have said that he got these while he was a part of the US occupation of Japan. Not sure.

The sword still contains cosmoline. I'm gonna try to post pictures. Any information would be appreciated. And, yes, I know there is probably an inscription that reads: "Man with hole in pocket feels cocky." Other than that, any ideas?

That's weird. I've never noticed the flag before. I didn't sign up with an avatar. Good eyes, though. I live in the Deep South United States. So deep, in fact, there are folks nearby who don't know yet that Lee surrendered!!

For some reason Treasure Net is not showing an option for me to post pictures as I post this in the Quick Reply box. I took a picture of the scabbard, but can't figure out how to post it up. Nonetheless, AU, i did find numbers on my scabbard in the exact spot you showed in your picture. I'll try to describe:

It looks like the fist number is either a "0" or a symbol of some sort or an inverted "10." To better explain, it looks like a "0" and directly beneath it a horizontal "1," if that makes sense. Anyway, the numbers after this are 13242. The blade has 213242. Not exactly the same, but close. What do ya'll make of it? Thanks!

That is the correct number on the scabbard to match your sword, it's common even today to only have the last few numbers of the main serial number on minor parts of a weapon, if you look for matching numbers on the rifle you will find that many of the smaller parts will only have the last few numbers of the main serial number found on the barrel if they are indeed original to the rifle.

Also it is perfectly fine to thoroughly clean the bore of the rifle to help see if it does or doesn't have rifling, this will not negatively affect the value of the rifle, it actually may help the value if you find that it does have the rifling.
