I was back at the same site I found the 1701 coin on Friday, but today was WW2 day.

Large caliber casing. 9.5 cm x 2.5 cm. 12.5 mm round
Head stamp has AB on top, 1F on left, 40 at the bottom and can't make anything out in the right but looks like an L or E.

i didn't think you could metal detect in Italy...
Very much legal except for in certain areas, archaeological sites, forest reserves and other protected sites. And standard reporting process as most European countries
 

I'm planning a trip to Italy next year... maybe I should consider taking a detector...hmmmmm
