Hi All,

Thanks for those that responded to my earlier email showing the WWI medals. I agree with not restoring them and leaving them as is and will pass that along to the family.

They also had the Military Ribbon shown below which I believe was from the same soldier. I believe it is Army? and not sure what [/ATTACH] IMG_3812.JPGIMG_3811.JPGthe color bands mean. Any thoughts?

Thanks

The red and black is WWII occupation ribbon.

United Nations Service Medal (Blue with multiple white stripes)
Korea Service Medal w/ 1 campaign star (Blue with white stripe)
Army of Occupation Medal (Black, white and red)

So two medals for service in Korean War, and one medal for Occupation duty following WWII.

Campaigns periods for the Korean Service Medal:

-UN Defensive June 27 — Sept. 15, 1950
-UN Offensive Sept. 16 — Nov. 2, 1950
-CCF Intervention Nov. 3, 1950 — Jan. 24, 1951
-First UN Counteroffensive Jan. 25 — April 21, 1951
-CCF Spring Offensive April 22 — July 8, 1951
-UN Summer-Fall Offensive July 9 — Nov. 27, 1951
-Second Korean Winter Nov. 28, 1951 — April 30, 1952
-Korean, Summer-Fall May 1 — Nov. 30 1952
-Third Korean Winter Dec. 1, 1952 — April 30, 1953
-Korean, Summer May 1 — July 27, 1953

Korean Service Medal: The Korean Service Medal was awarded for service between June 27, 1950 and July 27, 1954 under and of the following conditions:

-Within the territorial limits of Korea in waters immediately adjacent thereto: or

-With a unit under the operational control of the Commander-in-Chief, Far East, other than those units within the territorial limits of Korea, which has been designated by the Commander-in-Chief, Far East, as having directly supported the military efforts in Korea; or

-Was furnished an individual certificate by the Commander-in-Chief, Far East, testifying to material contribution made in direct support of the military efforts in Korea

United Nations Service Medal: It is awarded to officers and enlisted members of the Armed Forces of the United States who participated in the action in Korea between June 27, 1950 and July 27, 1954, and who are also eligible for the Korean Service Medal.

Army of Occupation Medal: It is awarded for 30 consecutive days at a normal post of duty on assignment to the armies of occupation. Refer to Department of Defense 1348.33-M for areas which qualify for this award. Military service in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater between May 9, 1945 and Nov. 8, 1945, and in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater between Sept. 3, 1945 and March 2, 1946, shall only be considered if the service member received the applicable theater campaign medal for military service in the theater before the inclusive periods previously mentioned.

ETA: When worn on the uniform the Army of Occupation Medal has the highest precedence in this instance, so it would be positioned with that ribbon closest to the center of the chest. Also the ribbons are worn above the left pocket of the jacket or shirt. So if you were looking at the person wearing the rack it would look like this.

Army of Occupation medal for WW2 Europe was from 1945 to 1955, at least in Austria. My uncle was there in the 50's and got the occupation medal. Gary

True and good point and catch, the dates mentioned above is for those in the certain Theater of Operations, which causes some confusion. Below is the, let's call it "Normal" dates for award of it.

Germany clasp:

Germany (9 May 1945 to 5 May 1955)
Austria (9 May 1945 to 27 July 1955)
Italy (9 May 1945 to 15 September 1947)
West Berlin (9 May 1945 to 2 October 1990)

Japan clasp:

Japan (3 September 1945 to 27 April 1952)
Korea (3 September 1945 to 29 June 1949)
