Wow!! I Finally Dig a Silver Coin From the 1700's!!

After all these years of metal detecting I finally dug a silver coin from the 1700's! It's a 1748 Spanish Real! I stared hunting this morning at 9am and didn't find the Real until 5:30 pm! It would be my only silver coin for the day, but I'll take it. This is my first Spanish Real! The Real was only about 3 inches deep in another one of our common gopher infested areas. There was quite a lot of gopher activity around the coin, they may have brought it up. Also dug 1 wheatie and a strange looking medallion.
So I'm stoked about the Real!!

Hey bud I know I already replied but I didn't realize you were in Cali. I have a ton of respect for a guy like you. Sometimes I take for granted that I've got 1600s settlement surrounding me. For you to keep plugging away for years and finally nail that super early silver is awesome! These finds are all relative to where we live. And that's gotta be about as early as you can find there. Great job sticking with it man. Very cool

Really, really REALLY nice.

Congrats on an old and awesome find.

I'm waiting for the ground to thaw before I can even think of treasure hunting. Watching everyone here is the next best thing I guess.

Please tell me that wasn't in one of your parks that you find all that awesome stuff! Congrats on a great find! I have seen people in Cali say they have little chance of finding old coins, but I would think old Spanish would be the norm in Cali. Great job!

NICE!!! still looking myself! Think I would go to that area and md many times! congrats!

wow, totally awesome find

Wayda finally get on the board. Aren't those coins fairly rare in your area?

I actually know quite a lot of people in the hobby and have only seen probably 3 or 4 of these type coins dug from other detectorist from our area since I stared metal detecting 30 years ago.
You would think after all the dozens Spanish Missions established up and down California back in the 1700's more of these coins would be found? We also have the Presidio Army base in San Fransisco the was originally a Spanish Fort in the 1700's. Perhaps this is the reason we are finding a few of these type coins?

Believe me I hit this are hard over the last 30 years and so have about a thousand other guys. How this coin was missed I don't know! Perhaps I can thank all those gophers for digging up the park so I could find it!

It was found in a park! I still usually average 1 or 2 seated a year on the here on the west coast. Probably not as many as you guys, but we get a few. California had a relatively small population compared to the east coast when the older coins were circulating, that's why we do cartwheels when we find one!

Awesome find! Congrats On a really great find! WTG!

Thanks! Now that I can think about what I just found, this might be one of oldest silver coins I've seen dug in California? I'm sure there are some older ones that were dug by other people, but not much older?...Oh, maybe not, there probably is some 1600's or 1500's Spanish stuff out there?

Congrats on Spanish silver! You guys on the west coast are killing it lately - gold coins galore and now Spanish silver. The only digging in my near future is my driveway - a huge snow storm is on the way! :BangHead:

I'm headed to the beach on Wednesday if possible. We are supposed to have high winds and monstrous waves. Should take a lot of sand with it. This beach is very close to a 1607 colony. You just never know

That gives me hope living in Ca.also.Very cool.
