Would you "call in sick" to metal detect?

We go to work to get money to pay our bills. The object here is to have less bills so we have to work less. We only have so many days of good health and shouldn't waste them toiling in someone else's garden. Smile, smell the roses, get drunk, have fun before your on the wrong side of the grass.

Now that I am older I am glad I did it all the time..The company has survived without me every time...

My answer would be "Maybe...". I'm lucky enough to work at a place where they're very easy-going and wouldn't have a problem with me calling in sick on a random day. That said, I hardly ever call in sick, so I've built up that goodwill. I also get 11 stat holidays and 5 sick days plus 3 weeks vacation each year, so I have some flexibility there as well. Generally speaking, I could take any day off and my dept would function perfectly in my absence, but there are certain times when I would just simply not consider missing work, and if an "amazing opportunity" happened to fall on one of those days, I'd just have to ignore it. There are some responsibilities that just can't be sluffed off. So, I would say if you can manage it and not put your job or your quality of work in jeopardy, go for it!

Thanks all.
Sandman, you should write a book! Your logic is inspiring.
My work or commitments won't suffer a bit. This is a "one time shot" I ain't gonna miss!
As for missing work, I don't. At times, other folks welfare depend on me solely. If this were the case, I'd never considered it.

hikerdude, in this particular situation, if I went with a flashlight after work all I would see is 8" of newly poured concrete.
Peace

I did once but it was for plain avoidance of work related mental illness.

The last time I called in sick, I got such an embarrassing guilt trip from my bosshole, it wouldn't be worth the grief. I am saving my sick days for when the company says we gotta work Saturdays... That will give me 5 weeks to find a new gig.

Yep, sure did :laughing7:

being my own boss I can take off any day I want..so hell YES!!!

when you call in just say you have some personal yeto do. You are not saying that you are sick so you will not be lying to them. Metal detecting is personal business.
when I call in I say my name clock # and that I WILL NOT BE IN that all didn't tell them I was sick so no l did not lye to them I didn't go in.

Hello All,
Let's say 8-10 inches of topsoil has been removed from a site that has produced 1800s silver and relics. If you had a one day opportunity to metal detect site, would you relinquish your daily obligations to detect said site before it's under concrete?
Your opinions please...
Thanks
Peace

In a heart beat!!!!!!

I called in sick one time to do something that I have forgotten what it was and ended up sick in bed for three days! Why can't you take a vacation day instead?

Whenever I've gone when I' have prior obligations I find pull tabs and bottle tops
Usually carma strikes so I don't go unless its scheduled (god I'm lame)

Absolutely! I am salary and work a lot of overtime that I am not compensated for so my employer still gets their money worth out of me when I "disappear" after lunch on a Friday.

I metal detect because it is a relaxing and fulfilling hobby for me. If I have a stressful day or week at work, I almost guarantee that I will take a half a day or two to detect and unwind. Getting rid of stress by detect is good for your health
