Would this get you excited!?

two types of gun sight trees * one is a tree within gun range of a homestead and easily and totally visible from it old folks would use the tree as a marker to know where they buried their cash at -- if you were "seem" or heard * at night) poking about it count on lead coming your way. --- the other type is a tree the splits into a "V" like the rear of a gun sight .(thus a "gun sight" tree) its an old hillbilly type term

Ivan:

I have no dought that a pleh . . . plethora of juveybillies would
not recognize a gunsight tree if they were astraddle one.

I tend to know a lot of "arcane" or obscure or odd knowledge --but thars because I have read alot since I was a very small child --knowing stuff that only few others know was always fun to me. -- I seek out the oldest books and rare maps and other odd or "rare" knowledge . folks that know me often bring things to me to ID and by interacting with lots of other folks , I add their knowledge base to mine as time goes by.

I got hillbilly kinfolks --so of course I know what a posthole bank is .. a mason jar or coffee can buried so many post down the fence line along side the post's base in the ground -- thus "post hole" bank

Wow-I haven't visited this post in awhile! Very soon they'll harvest the corn in this area and I'll be going back! I went past there today and noticed that the 'road' through the field going to the back seems to show some recent travel...it won't be long now! I'll take pics of the site when I do go back. There are plenty of 'gunsight' trees around if you mean the type that are within shootin' range of the house! Some of the trees are HUGE! One tree has some interesting implements hanging in it-don't know what they are but they seem to have been there a long time. The area around the tree on the ground has a lot of iron bits and chunks, but I'll clear it out and give it a go with the detector. Post hole bank sites abound here as well, just need to start searching for the lucky strike!

I REEEALLY hope the poison ivy has died back! This place was covered in it during the spring.

10-4 on the dead poison ivy! And whatever you do, DON'T BURN IT! The smoke is much worse than the raw sap...Put me in the hospital TWICE as a youngster...Once for 2 weeks!

Getting closer to going back!! The corn is DOWN! Nothing but stubble remains and I'm hoping they'll turn that under within the next week.. Then it's GAME ON! You still can't see the first house for all the vegetation, so that means the one in the woods will likely be all but invisible...but I know where it is and have devised a plan of attack!

Looking at that picture; it's circular appearance; it just might be the old cistern of the homeplace. There's not that much growth in that area to stop a farmer from knocking it down and plowing there, BUT an underground cistern built with concrete or brick; just under the soil, WOULD. If it is, expect a lot of trash (today's treasure?), dirt and snakes. Be careful, it could fall in with you.

That jar you found with the dirt in it MIGHT be the sign left by an old-time treasure hunter to let those coming after him know that the treasure has been found. (per KVM's writings). Keep looking thought, there could be others around.

Very interesting possibility about a cistern... If you notice in the picture, you'll see the shadow from the trees behind me. That's how close that spot is to the woods. The house is a bit further back-maybe 75yds. Now, between that clump and the house, there's a very sunken in area that appears to be square, and tops of the walls are showing-it's concrete. I've been really careful about walking directly IN that, because it looks like it was/is pretty deep. I don't know if it's a storm shelter or just what, but it appears to be FULL of trash. There are plenty of cool old oil cans there as well. This too will take some serious time and sweat to explore. I'll be going back with reinforcements and really giving the place a good going over! It's gonna be a fun fall...

Headed back today for another look!! Most everything will still be grown over so I'm not sure I expect much in the way of finds. However, I think I'm going to map the layout of everything to see if I can come up with any ideas. I also want to take another look to see how hard it will be to clear everything and neaten up to improve the hunting. More to come!

I agree! I think we haven't even scratched the surface yet on the other old house and NOW THIS!!

Maybe Poppa lceaned out the beer account that you found. There might be others. New Farmall Cub account, Momma spent too much at bingo account, etc.

I'm finally starting to see some upcoming breaks in my schedule! I've been working 7 days a week for months now but hope to get back to this site on Sunday!!
