I know some dont give a rats a.. about worked flakes but I found quite a few today and decided to take a pic of them to show what they look like to the ones that dont know what they are.
These type of tools were made and used as quickie tools. Made on the moment for a quick clean of a kill and then just left behind because they were so easy to make. Most flake or Debitage tools dont get noticed by most collectors because they are only worked along the edges.
Hope somebody enjoys these, thanks rock

Thanks for this thread and the Pics Rock. As a newbie hunter I pick up anything and everything that looks worked and lots of flakes! I think I have some small scraper tools but not for sure; I may be reading too much into them....they may have been made by the farmer and his disc!

Well if you find some that are modified you will see the difference between the ones with work on the edges and the ones without. You can usually feel the ones that were used for tools by rubbing your fingers across the edges. Just dont push too hard cause some will still be sharp enough to slice your fingers. You will feel tiny chips in the edges if they have been worked and some you can see the work. I pick up most flakes that are at least 1 inch long and pocket them till I get home. Then I will wash them with the other artifacts I have collected for the day. If they arent worked they go in my broke bucket. If they are worked I will keep them if they are made from some pretty material. Allot of some nice colors in them. Thanks for the interest, rock
This one posted is translucent and colorful. Its so big it is almost a scraper.

I have a couple of spots I hunt were about 75% of the flakes you pick up will have a worked edge. I keep them all since they are Tools and artifacts. Some people don't like them but I think they are neat little Tools.

Well the disc can chip the cherts and flints. I have been seeing the difference between the 2. When I first started hunting the fields I thought they were worked artifacts at times but now I can see the difference between the worked and the disc damage. Not tonight but in the near future I will post the difference and do a different thread so everyone can see. The title will be ........rock verses artifacts..........so be on the look out for it. I believe it will be a very useful thread.

Umm. After all my field walking in heavily farmed fields, the one thing I have come to understand, is those farm implements do far less flaking and chipping that you would think. Scratching, gouging and scuffing is most common. Flaking is rare though from what I have seen. I think what you might be thinking is plow or disk damage, is just reduction flakes that have no edge work. Not trying to say it doesn't happen, but the dirt usually gives way, allowing the stone to move before it is busted apart in respect to MOST materials. I find way more scruffed and scratched field stones than those with chips or what looks like flakes off of them.

Her's a nice little KRF Flake I picked up yesterday with some very light nibbling on one edge. Then one of my favorite old finds.

Great, looking forward to seeing this thread!

Those are some nice examples of worked flakes. What I was referring to was the damage from the farming tractors which make some natural Cherts and Flints look as if they have been altered by human hands but actually have not been altered.

I keep all flakes that I find, no matter how small, even the ones that arent worked...doesnt take much to make me happy.

I use to keep all of them but I got tired of bending over so much. So I have limited myself to the larger ones or the strange shaped ones.

That last one is just plain crazy cool looking. Thanks for the fine look.

I understood you. I don't think you understood me. Did you read my post?

So what would you call most of those flakes you just put up pictures of Rock? Tractor reduction flakes?

I can see one for sure is a man altered tool made on a flake. But the rest look like reduction flakes made by a knapper, and not a farm implement.

Yes that is correct they are all made by ancient hands. I have not yet put up any examples of damaged rocks. If and when I do it will be on a post all by itself.

I found this Cache of tools last week. They were all within a 5 ft area square. I hope to find more after the next rain. I am keeping them all in one frame.

Now that's a nice cache of tools made from some great material.

I am looking forward to your upcoming thread showing us the implement caused flakes and how they differ from the knappers flakes.

Joel

Yes sir, I always pick up everything that shows edge work or signs of being a utilized flake. I have lots of stuff like those dandies nc field hunter.
