WooHoo!!! I've been waiting a long time to dig this button!!

I'm still shaking a bit!..... I've been hunting a fur trade site for awhile and have been dreaming of finding a Hudsons Bay Co button for a long time. Today was my day!! Finds were slim, but it was a day of quality, not quantity!! :headbang:

It was getting dusk when I took these pics, so they're not perfect.

Here's the button I've been waiting for.........

A close-up.....It doesn't do it justice.......Backmarked "FIRMIN & WESTALL"

Another find from today that would have normally been the killer find of the day......I knew what it was as soon as I saw the glass stone poking out of the dirt.........An early fur trade ring!!

Here it is with the dirt knocked off! :icon_thumright:

What a way to end the detecting season......Winter is supposed to be here this week according to the weather man.. :-[

Congratulations Rob. It is beautiful! Can you tell us U.S. guys some ore about it; why it was worn; who was it made for, things like that? Again, it is really nice! :icon_thumright:

Thanks for all the comments guys!!

I'll try to put this in perspective for those that don't know much about the fur trade, especially here in Western Canada..........

The province of British Columbia is about 370,000 square miles and the first white man to explore the interior of the province was Alexander Mackenzie in 1793, while working for a fur trade company (The Northwest Co.).......Shortly after that a handful of fur trade posts and forts were built in the province with a small number of men at each.....By 1820 there would have probably have been less than 300 white men in the whole province. Add to that, the fact that probably only the chief factor and maybe one or two clerks at each fort would wear these buttons. The rarity of finding these buttons is amazing and as old as it gets for history here. :icon_thumright:

In 1821 the Hudsons Bay Co. merged with its most successful rival, the North West Company based in Montreal. The resulting commercial enterprise now spanned the continent - all the way to the Pacific Northwest.........The site I'm hunting was established in 1821.

Here's a couple slightly better pics after just enough cleaning to bring out the little gilt remaning on the front.....The shank is intact! :icon_thumright:

Great history and congrats on your find.

Amazing button in amazing condition. It just doesn't get any better than that.

As I said to Iron Patch, I'm looking forward to seeing, in the near future, the early recoveries made by you guys up there in Canada! :notworthy: I just love to see those "I Always Wanted to Find" relics being crossed off of anyone's list!

It would be hard for you not to, they were in business over 300 years. (I do believe)
