Rub it with a bit of baking soda and a few drops of water. That will clean it up a bit make it nice and shiney. Don't do this to key date finds....

Dwatson4...I would never clean any coin that remotely valuable. However, this dime is only worth a couple of bucks so I am ok with shining it up a bit. What is the best way to do the baking soda method? Would you recommend carefully using electrolysis? I'm asking because I did make some baking soda/water paste and gently used a toothbrush, but it's still fairly black...

you could try putting hydrogen peroxide in the microwave until it's boiling then drop the coin in- don't scrub it at all -if it has dirt or grime it will bubble off (hopefully). if you have silver cleaner for jewelry that will take that tarnish right off of it with out scratching it. I found a 1906 and hit it with cleaner then a toothbrush - bummed me out I scratched mine, but being my first silver from the ground I am keeping it anyhow....

great find, hope u get many more

Be careful with electrolysis! I dissolved the face right of a mercury dime after making the mistake of leaving it to long in the cleaning process!

I only clean dug silver coins that have environmental damage or some other problem like gouges and bad scratches, holes, or dents. There is a product out there called Wrights Silver Cream, it works pretty well.

Yeah, the electrolysis might be a bit of a gamble. I've decided to leave most of my finds the way they are....
