i know this is kind of an older post but wanted to add my thoughts.
The wooded areas are good for a few reasons.
1.) Less likely that someone else has detected there already.
2.) Don't need to be as neat when digging just need to fill the hole back in.
3.) When you drop things in the woods they are less likely to be found. (less foot traffic, harder to see items on the ground as opposed to a freshly mowed evenly cut grass field.)

disadvantages of wooded areas
1.) Nature. Ticks, mosquitos, poison ivy/oak/sumac etc. I got shots for lyme disease a few years back so the ticks don't bother me too much but I still spray on the deet around my boots and hat. Depending on where you live somethings are worse than others but for me there is nothing worse in the woods than getting poison ivy/oak on you. I was immune when I was younger but not anymore. You essentially have to throw away everything you were wearing depending on how much got on you. Been close to a three weeks and i'm still getting blisters and rashes from it(Because I forgot to clean the oils off my MD after I got contaminated!!!) :BangHead:
2.) People that don't have binoculars use their rifle scopes to get a better look at you.

I know people already mentioned some or all of these. Just wanted to solidify some tips I've read and lived that I strongly agree with.

Someone hunting down here last week shot a horse. A very expensive horse.Poor thing had to be euthaniized.

Nobody shoots a horse hunting. Horses get shot by people shooting horses. Action should be taken. Some "hunter" needs his day in front of a judge.

You'be be surprised what the Out-oof State turkeys (hunters) shoot here out west. Some of them don't have an ounce of sense. .......I'm talking showing up at a Fish and Game check point eith a gutted and cleaned Mule in thier truck....Thinking they have a record Mule deer......Horses might get shoot at from time to time because they are so similar in size and color to Elk. It's not even worth it going hunting anymore where it's crowded anymore. During the rifle hunt at least ...But I do go out. Just make sure I am wearing orange vest and hat. Idon't bother being too quiet, and I don't wander too far from the truck, even tie some orange cloth to the antenna of that. If I do get shot at, well,... these deer shoot back ;D PS I go out in the fall a LOT and set up an artists easel, I paint landscapes, I've never had any problem cause I tie red tape to everything.

Agreed!!!! I wear an orange vest this time of year also when in huntin territory! Be smart

Woods are a great place to hunt. Find out where old houses once stood. I also do research on old school houses and then try to find some where there is some woods real close and search there The kid used to play hide and seek at break time. Good luck and at this time of year be safe. Plus if it is deer season make sure you wear orange or wait until it is over......Matt
