I have this ruby red wood vessel that's been passed down to me
8" tall, width 4.5", base is 2.75 w
the top lifts as a shot glass of sorts
Very curious about the wood carving, almost looks Indian
the wood is extremely thin, both the cup and the vessel itself
cant imagine how Could could turn / carve this thing so thin
any idea?
age?
origin of the wood carving?

what would the definition be of a tumble - upthe wood on this is nearly paper thin
the wood turned cup sits perfectly on top, and I mean perfect
Navajo?, due to the carving?
Theres no paint anywhere

Bedside carafe, or a water set. Placed on a bedside table for a drink of water. Most are made of glass or pottery(I think). I went through all the ones on eBay and couldn't find one just like yours, Brady. I'll look through some of my antique books and see if I can find anything else.

I think the pic is good enough to establish mahogany (I lean towards genuine).

Is it a drinking vessel? Doesn't seem big enough to be a mahogany knife box.

the wood looks porous, has small holes in the grain when you look at the unfinished / polished ends
its clearly a turned pc
there are extremely fine turn grooves, as fine as a record album
The base base is concave
wood is so very thin

I guess it could have been hand turned on a lathe. Not necessarily electric powered.

I would not think it was meant to hold water. Having a small neck, it would not dry out very well. Seems like it would get moldy very quickly inside.

We are trying but it appears we do not have an expert in this field.

Hey bigCypress
Thanks so much for your input
I really thought this would be a simple ID due to the carvings / art
At the very least, I would like to figure out the carvings, art work, looks indian to me
But its odd that the drinking cup / shot glass matches / carved perfectly to sit on top

I agree with BCH that it looks like Swietenia Macrophylla. Could very well be from Cuba, Honduras or Brazil. Holding the piece in hand I wouldn't be able to tell whether it's mahogany from other tropical climate like Africa or Asia or whether it's a mahogany substitute specie. One of the desired characteristics of mahogany is it's wood carving qualities, which is why it has been used for furniture through time.

Getting limited hits on my searches and can't seem to find a better search word than 'urns' :icon_scratch:
