Today was a beautiful Saturday. I did all my chores, mowed, cleaned, washed and waxed the car....ran some errands...ect.ect. SO after all the work and business was done, I had the remainder of the day for detecting. Where to go, where to go......Quite awhile ago an acquaintance spoke of an old foundation behind a newer home on a back road...he had been hunting these woods for quite awhile but said that the foundation was on private land. I never got a chance to investigate the tip off until today. I found the foundation on the map and plopped a coordinance on the closest house. BINGO! A younger couple answered the door and gave me the thumbs up....but warned me of poison ivy and ticks :laughing7:.....I find the foundation with ease. Immediately signals were popping everywhere....I swear I couldn't walk 2 ft without getting a repeatable signal. Alot of nice bottles laying on the surface, and large pieces of crock. I just had a awesome feeling about this place....the very first "keeper" signal was the 1855 Large Cent...I was amped. So in the few hours there I dug a nice haul of keepers but an ENORMOUS amount of 1800's trash. SO after my bug spray started to wear off I decided to do another lap and call it in.....On the way back to the opening in the woods I got a very solid signal.....4-6 inches.....I dig my plug...flip it over...and US is just staring at me with a hug smirk on it's face....MY FIRST PLATE!!! I sat in that very spot for a good 15 minutes in a stupor. I don't have many Civil War relics and I might as well start big. Thanks for lookin folks.

Thanks alot man...this piece is in exceptional shape..!

Your buckle is actually earlier than the American Civil War. ;D

What you have there is called a "baby" US belt plate, and these had only two hooks (one on each end), rather than the usual three hooks, or the two "puppy paw" studs and one hook, that is commonly seen on the larger CW period belt plates (technically the "puppy paw" style is also pre-war).

These "baby" US belt plates date to around the 1840's, and I recall seeing these surface on Mexican War period sites.

Congratulations on a nice belt plate that is much rarer than the usual Civil War style. :icon_thumright:

Nice Baby U.S. Belt Plate. I like the 'Babies' alittle better than the full sized U.S. Plates, Congrats Sniff, she's a pretty one!! Nice little Suspender/Breeches Buckle also, looks like it has the date and/or "Paris" on it. I find them alot at CW camp and battle sites around here dated between the 1850s and 1860s and many times with the word "PARIS" also. :icon_thumleft:

Congrats on a beautiful plate!

Yeah, I should have edited. This plate was manufactured in 1839 I suppose, but could have very well seen some action in the CW.

The suspender buckles are always a pleasant sight for me. I love anything with a patented date, this one is 1859. LOL my very first suspender buckle...I swore up and down it was a knee buckle....hahaha....live n' learn.
