Can anyone help me identify this crystal I found in a Wisconsin river? It is not scratched by quartz, the outside(polished surface) was scratched by a sapphire but the inside (broken surface) will not even scratch with a diamond sharpening file. It is slippery, cold, and heavy. The size is bigger than a quarter horizontally and vertically. Are there any tips besides asking my local asshole gem guy to determine the worth of this thing?

Looks like quartz to me. Diamonds have a higher refractive index that gives them a much different look, even in an uncut form.

Do you have a college or University near by? You may be better off taking it to a geologist/professor then to a jeweler.

Hi, When I started to get more into this MD activity I looked up nearby MD clubs. People are finding rings and other jewelry with stones all the time. In the group I most recently visited they had both gold and diamond testers. That would be my first check. Then a reputable appraiser. Imagine walking into a jewelry store and the man behind the counter says: "Nope, It's not a diamond,........ but I'll give you $200 for it." >:( Just like if you find a gold mine, be careful of who you talk to. ::) It's a prettyrock to own either way. Nice find! :icon_king:
