Had a great morning at a site hunted by my son and I yesterday although he decided to stay home and sleep. I recently got the new XP Deus and so far I am very impressed! In an area I thought I had searched thoroughly I've found over a dozen bullets, three eagle buttons, various belt and knapsack parts, but the best came yesterday! I dug this Wisconsin pin that is shown on page 165 of Howard Crouch's book and is described as a veteran pin as worn by veterans of the western theatre armies. Very similar to the Tenn. pin found a while back by another T-net member. I will continue to hit this site because it continues to produce and I will post more pics of the year end total of me and my son. 2012 has been a very good year! Thanks for looking and HH!

WoW That is neat! Are those considered to be Veteran's pins? Great find!

That is a GREAT find! Those are really rare to find and your's looks to be in great shape. Congrats. Tennessee digger

only info I've found so far is that they were pins worn by veterans of the western theatre. I don't think this was a post war drop, it was at about ten inches deep.

Quindy (VOL1266-X) might be able to help you with it. He found one, too! Give him a shout!

That is a GREAT find. Probably the find of the year!

BIG Congrats!

Congrats on an outstanding recovery. As I told you via PM, Doug & I know a veteran digger who has dug over 40 CS buckles in 40 years but not a veterans pin. Here's what I know about them based on Jim Stanley's article in a past N S Trader MJagazine:
It is thought they were tied to reenlistment as they could be privately purchased from sutler stores and were not issued by the military. After a year of enlistment in the Union Army, a soldier could buy a state pin which he wore and could take home after the war. Many soldier CDVs show a Union Soldier wearing one on his left chest. They were also worn on kepis and hats. Eleven Union states had a veteran pin. Apparently, the attachment pin was thin wire and not very suited for field wear. You made a great recovery from a very historic site. WTG, Quindy.

Jim Stanley's article refers to them as Western Theater State Pins, in fact he refutes the term "Veteran's Pins" used in the Crouch and Harris's relic book, and seeks documentation of the term. I have yet to see one photograph with a soldier wearing one, and if Tennessee Digger has seen one please pass it on. I have heard many say the majority have come out of 1862-65 sites. I have a WIS dug in Shiloh. Only 3 Wis. units at Shiloh 14th, 16th, 18th, all formed in early 62. So therefore probably not a Vets pin, as they were only in service 3 months prior to battle. I have yet to see a non dug example, nor one with attachment pin, although my example has part of the attachment device. I welcome any photo of a soldier wearing one. Wonderful pin, great collectable.

I know this post is old, but something like that from pounded Cold harbor . . . NICE.
