I wanted to post this yesterday but man was this a crusty coin and needed to clean it overnight.

I was at my site dating back to 1675 and wayyyyy in the back. Found a few Mercs and thought why not a few more before going home?

I get a deep signal, 12-41/42 but kind of strong. The CTX said 5". I dig down and it's a few inches deeper than the indicated depth. Low and behold a super-crusty green disk pops out!

Seeing the condition I knew not to even try for a field ID.

I texted my buddy that I broke my month-long copper slump, put it in some dirt, and carried on....

That nigh at home I tried distilled water but nothing budged. The I did a hot peroxide bath and things loosened up. I still couldn't get an id, got frustrated, and threw it in a mineral oil bath.

I came home from work today, used a kabob skewer and everything melted away!!! Phew! One side is better than the other but it is decent enough to make out William 3rd and part of the date.

Happy Hunting

I was stoked to find a copper yesterday. Today I'm stoked that it's 1690's. It's only my second 1600's coin!

Yep. And this one wasn't my oldest Chris. Makes that half cent look like a baby! Lol. Just kidding bud.

If the date is in the upper right of the coin its a 1699. The only year the date appeared there.

*hangs head in shame*:notworthy:

That's an great oldie- nice job saving the patina while bringing out the detail.

Thanks man. I couldn't pull it off like that again if I tried. Old Coppers are the darndest things.

It's at the bottom. The last digit is cut off though. 1 6 9 X

"Dang it!" Lol

I wouldn't be too concerned about the condition of your coin Steve. It's a rare find in any condition. Nice going!!

Any 1600's coin is a great find. You're on a good site, pound it hard and I bet you'll pull a few more oldies out of there.

Thanks Bill. That old copper went from something I thought was blank to a winner. The site I'm hunting is putting together a small museum display, and I'm glad I finally "bridged" the time gap. The site dates to 1670ish and the oldest item I found before this was a 1747 KG2 1/2 penny. It takes a huge load off and I'm now able to complete the display for an organization full of some great people.
