My 83 year old Father has been building a new house on the side of a mountain. It has an awesome view and is very steep getting up to it. My father has a dozer to use as well as a big enclosed backhoe. He made the road up to the house site and also made the flat area for the house etc to be built on. Then he dug out a large chunk of the side of the mountain to have a 14x14 room on the backside of the home that is surrounded by the ground. The home is 2 story and looks beautiful. He has built a "deck/ramp" that allows him to go out the 2nd floor above the 1st floor 14x14 room. This ramp will allow him to unload many large things right into the 2nd floor. The catch was that he had to build a road up the side of the mountain behind and above the house so that a truck could access the ramp.
My dad had dozed a rough road up and around the second floor but there was a stump that was giving him fits. So, he took his backhoe and meant to dig it out. Unfortunately, the backhoe's front end suddenly raised up and the sheer weight spun it around. He was already fairly close to the edge of the steep drop off down to the 1st floor level and the backhoe slipped off. The backhoe immediately rolled down on a runaway run, heading down the mountain. Fortunately, there was a very large dirt pile in the way and he clipped the edge of it and thus was able to slow down enough to finally get it stopped about 30 yards down.
When I saw him the next day, he was pretty sore from the wild ride. He does most of this when he feels like it and usually there is no one around. I got onto him about being safer and I think that it really got his attention. He said that it happened so fast that he never had time to really think about it. I was just happy that he didn't roll it and get hurt worse or even die. I can't stop him from what he does but he is getting older and isn't as sharp as he used to be. Just hope that he gets everything done soon so he quits the big equipment (at least on the side of the mountain.) He said that he had been on a rollar coaster ride fifty years ago but this was more scary and rightly so. I always say that it only takes a moment to kill yourself...actually I say it only takes a moment of stupidity to kill yourself and or someone else.
