Why worry about banning rifles when HANDGUNS are the big killers? Smell a rat?

I don't pretend to know the details on this person and don't really wish to as I find his behavior despicable, however, felons are not legally able to own a firearm.

If he was a felon in possession of a firearm, he was breaking the law.

If he was not a felon, then in all likelihood, he could legally own a gun. There are of course exceptions.

Where does it say in the constitution that a Felton can't own a gun?

Gun ownership on the decline? I think not. Twice as many guns owned in the US today, compared to 1968. More guns, and yet gun violence is on the decline. Go figure.

A look at America's gun industry - CSMonitor.com

The decline in gun ownership began some years earlier, according to data from Gallup and the General Social Survey, conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. New York University political scientist Patrick Egan charted the decline in a recent blog post.

As Egan notes, the percentage of Americans who report owning a pistol or shotgun, the weapons most often used in crime, is now down to 1 in 5, about half what it was in the 1970s.

Of course, hardened criminals aren’t likely to respond to the GSS survey, so there’s probably some under-reporting going on. But that was true 30 or 40 years ago, too, and isn’t likely to have affected the overall trend.

The major point is that the American “culture of gun ownership” that one often hears about has been strikingly on the wane for the past generation. A similar decline has taken place in the number of Americans who hunt, now about 5% of the population.

Your right, I know people who have bought guns since Christmas, that never bought guns in their life..... You go to a gun store they are full of people and many are buying them for the first time....... On average between my job ( we have gun stores that are customers ) and my private trips I go to a gun store may 3-4 times times a week..... I know the owners because I work on their phones and data. I have asked them about their business and how much new business there is from people who have never bought, they just laugh and say sales are through the roof and many are first time buyers. The classes for CWL are always full and many of those are new gun owners........

Unfortunately TH you learn that you can not infer 50 year national statistics from a trip to the local gun store. Not sure if this graph will work, but give it a try. If not you can see the decline in the percent of gun ownership on about a million diff sights.

If you think they aren't coming after pistols, you're mistaken. The reason for the post is to show that the AWB is NOT about murders committed with "assault rifles", it's about confiscating weapons PERIOD!

The long guns have to go first because many hunters and others have experience and can "reach out and touch" an aggressor from a much longer distance with a long rifle. It's a matter of self preservation for the people wanting to take your weapons.

You have to remember, once the long weapons are gone, rounding up the pistols will be much easier.

Murder has been on the decline, yes. Gun ownership has been on the decline as well, NO WAY! Gun ownership has been growing for years.

A rise in weapons is correlated to the decrease in murders. The more weapons, the fewer the break ins.

Criminals don't want to die either, and they'll avoid places where they don't feel safe unless there's a huge pay off.

You can watch my back anyday Brother.

How about we scare you with FACTS. Enter the Gallup poll . . .

Self-Reported Gun Ownership in U.S. Is Highest Since 1993

These are just the ADMITTED owners of firearms. Remember, it is OUT OF FASHION to own or possess a firearm in today's world.

Gallup Poll said:
BOTTOM LINE

A clear societal change took place regarding gun ownership in the early 1990s, when the percentage of Americans saying there was a gun in their home or on their property dropped from the low to mid-50s into the low to mid-40s and remained at that level for the next 15 years. Whether this reflected a true decline in gun ownership or a cultural shift in Americans' willingness to say they had guns is unclear. However, the new data suggest that attitudes may again be changing. At 47%, reported gun ownership is the highest it has been in nearly two decades -- a finding that may be related to Americans' dampened support for gun-control laws. However, to ensure that this year's increase reflects a meaningful rebound in reported gun ownership, it will be important to see whether the uptick continues in future polling.

Wonder what it will show for 2012 and 2013?

Could Obammy be a shill for the gun manufacturers? Bet he owns stock in one or more weapons manufacturers.

I know DiFi doesn't care where her money comes from. Could that be why she keeps pushing these bans? The sudden windfalls when they try to ban "assault weapons"?

Inquiring minds want to know . . .

That will be interesting. I just bought a ton of smith and Wesson stock so I hope it's through the roof. Also I deal with a small public lead recycler that is doing a brisk biz selling to bullet manufacturers.

A ton of folks bought after Obama 1 so not sure if a ton of new people jumped on board after Obama 2. Maybe just the folks who already have guns just bought more guns - not sure.

Mr Stockpicker,

Help me understand this "more guns, less gun ownership" statement.

Population up 50% since 1968, gun numbers up 100%......are people buying them and then destroying them?

thank you.

Percent of population that has owned guns. And more guns yet lower gun ownership is simple - greater number of guns owned by individual gun owners. Now folks have 5,10, 20 guns each instead of 1 or 2. These are pretty well know and accepted facts and can be seen in dozens and dozens of sources. But one has the right to believe whatever they want.

Any sources?

Here is why I ask . . .

The source you cited uses the same gallup poll I used as a source, but THE NUMBERS DON'T MATCH THE ACTUAL NUMBERS IN GALLUP'S POLL.

Your source:

Gallup's actual numbers:

sgcossbzcei5hhmpeq0ryq.gif

Is the IPCC branching out into other fields now? Sure looks like their handiwork in your source's graph.

Simple explanation is that either (1) they got their information about Gallup's poll from an untrustworthy source, or (2) THEY are the untrustworthy source.

So, a reliable source for your argument would be appreciated . . . and for future reference, an image repository that is popular because it stores pics of anything doesn't make it a very reliable source.

A reliable source would include both a graph AND text explaining how they arrived at the numbers.

www.gstatic.com - you get a 404 error. Nothing there.

This is ANOTHER IMAGE REPOSITORY, not a source. They don't even list a legitimate source for their tiny tiny tiny graph. BTW, what is a "birth cohort"? Sounds 'cryptic'. :icon_scratch:

At least use bigger pictures (maybe 480 pixels minimum on longest dimension), that one is difficult on these old eyes.

Just go on goog images - you can find all you want in as much detail as you want.

Birth cohorts - just showing old grumpy men more likely to own guns I think. Beft

Well, I can draw pretty pictures too and make them show whatever I wish. That isn't evidence.

The discussion did not center around a certain demographic age group, it was the nation as a whole. I sure hope that gun ownership among those in their 70's and 80's has declined from what it was in their 20's and 30's. Too often, unfortunately, mental health can become an issue as well as various maladies that might bring about involuntary movements of the hands so in some cases they probably shouldn't be carrying because of mental or physical handicaps.

That's when it goes up I believe, not down. I don't think there is any debate that the percent of American that are gun owners has declined over the last 50 years. I think that common knowledge.

YOU ARE GRASPING AT STRAWS!

YOU HAVE NO PROOF FOR YOUR STATEMENT!

YOU IGNORE PROVIDED SOURCES!

That pretty much sums it up. You're one more attempt to prove a point with made up evidence from being put on ignore.
