Why worry about banning rifles when HANDGUNS are the big killers? Smell a rat?

The following information is taken from the FBI's own website . . . picture attached is what appeared today --- Click on the link to view for yourself.

FBI ? Expanded Homicide Data Table 8

The culprit in an overwhelming > 70% (that's more than 70%) of gun related homicides (murders) is not an assault rifle, but a handgun.

Rifles account for a measly < 5% of all deaths from firearms. Even if you added rifles, shotguns and any other type of firearm TOGETHER they account for less than 30% of all homicides.

Why would a peaceful, respectful government want to worry more about long rifles (or even assault rifles) when they comprise a VERY SMALL portion of the total cause of homicides?

Long rifles would be better than any other weapon should the government turn on its own people. Handguns would be of little use if the government used long rifles and could pick off armed citizens from long range. Handguns are only superior in close quarters . . . mostly face to face.

You folks who think the AWB is about safety need to wake up! GET YOUR HEADS OUT OF THE SAND AND LOOK AT THINGS REALISTICALLY!!!

I believe that before anyone wants to start regulating weapons, they should look at what is causing the biggest problem, attack that problem (oh boy! We can't go after the gang bangers, that would be RACIST!) FIRST.

Good post! Knives are bigger killers than rifles are according to their chart! Guess we should ban them as well.....

Murders over all have been on the decline as well......SOMETHING is working now so why fix it?

You pointed out murder has been on the decline for a while at the same time as gun ownership has been on a decline. So maybe something is working and we should continue to decline gun ownership. I don't agree with your point that we should continue to reduce gun ownership but you make a compelling point. Im not giving up my guns yet but you have given me some food for my thought. Continue to post more info on declining crime / murder rates and the decrease in gun ownership it's interesting info.

Only a fool would think it will stop here.......Next is our pistiols...

Supreme Court has already ruled the police are not obligated to protect the citizens, their job is to investigate and solve crime, if they will not protect us then it falls on us to protect outselves and our familes, it is our duty, it is our right to protect ourselves, the Constitution givs us that right and I will never surrender it....

People better wake up and start taking this serious because it is serious......If it crosses a line, it crosses a line for every American, not just the gun owners.....

In my job I meet a lot of people every week, on a positive note this week I have gotten 4 more people I met this week to join the NRA, I showed them the website and helped them join.........:hello2:

Nope can't go after the gangbangers is right... Got to love reverse discrimination.. It is just easier to say assualt rifle the shock factor is way higher with that than with handgun.. Most people are not educated enough to make a true argument about any kind of gun.. The only knowlegde they obtain is what the news and the internet tells them... Truly sad in my opinion.. You never here msn or yahoo or and other news channel telling americans about how hutners and gun owners are donating and raising money to help wounded soilers or teminally ill kids or handcapped children realize a dream.. Not that would show not only guns but gun owners and supporters in a different light and god forbid these morons try to do that.. As for the assualt rifles to handguns comparision any gun is dangerous in the hand of a crimminal in my opinion but so is any other weapon for that matter..

Actually it was big gun and the NRA that has stopped any attempt to remove cheap disposable handguns from the street. Big gun makes a TON of very high margin money from those guns.

If you think they aren't coming after pistols, you're mistaken. The reason for the post is to show that the AWB is NOT about murders committed with "assault rifles", it's about confiscating weapons PERIOD!

The long guns have to go first because many hunters and others have experience and can "reach out and touch" an aggressor from a much longer distance with a long rifle. It's a matter of self preservation for the people wanting to take your weapons.

You have to remember, once the long weapons are gone, rounding up the pistols will be much easier.

Murder has been on the decline, yes. Gun ownership has been on the decline as well, NO WAY! Gun ownership has been growing for years.

A rise in weapons is correlated to the decrease in murders. The more weapons, the fewer the break ins.

Criminals don't want to die either, and they'll avoid places where they don't feel safe unless there's a huge pay off.

Folks,

Pretty interesting stats....handguns vs riffles.....I'm thinking a good chunk of those hand gun deaths are probably settling of accounts among street gangs, etc.....versus the general public....however....doubt very much they'd have a breakdown of bad guys versus good guys taken out.....food for thought.

He was a criminal and died when he didn't obey the law by killing someone else. Try to stay on topic . . . I know its difficult, but that is how it works.

No one commented on your thread about Dykes. That's where you need to discuss that subject, not here.

Does someone like this still have a constitutional right to own a gun? I don't see anything in the second saying only non criminals can have a gun? Thoughts?

Gun ownership on the decline? I think not. Twice as many guns owned in the US today, compared to 1968. More guns, and yet gun violence is on the decline. Go figure.

I don't pretend to know the details on this person and don't really wish to as I find his behavior despicable, however, felons are not legally able to own a firearm.

If he was a felon in possession of a firearm, he was breaking the law.

If he was not a felon, then in all likelihood, he could legally own a gun. There are of course exceptions.
