Square nails were forged and may show the location of a homestead or building worth detecting. Settelars would often burn down or disassemble buildings if they were goings to abandon their homes and buildings because square nails and other iron objects were expensive and hard to come by. Making that area Worth detecting. Happy hunting 😁
They are still in production and use today.

I once found a pile of used square nails at an old site. It was likely the building had burned and they had raked up the nails.
