I began collecting coins when I was a kid in the mid 70s. Most of my hunting then was restricted to pennies and dimes, which was a much as I could afford on a five dollar a week allowance. I started searching rolls again around 2006 when I read on line that it was still possible to find silver halves from the bank. It goes without saying that I jumped back in feet first.I truly enjoy looking through rolls. I still get the same thrill when I see a silver edge in a roll as I did when I was a kid. Heck, I even enjoy finding wheat pennies which is where it all started!

I have read on other posts that people are searching to augment their retirement, or strictly for the profit involved. I have jokingly said that I would use my silver finds put my kids through college. However, in the end I am really just a collector at heart.

Why do you roll search?

Gilmore, you are FRIGGIN HILARIOUS!!! Promise me you'll never get offended by someone's stupid comment and leave this forum.

Why do I roll hunt?

1. The THRILL of the hunt - A box of halves is like opening 50 presents on Christmas morning. The thrill of cracking open a roll and seeing a silver edge is more addicting than heroine.

2. Profit - Unlike when I started roll hunting in the 80s when silver halves were worth about 60 cents, today you can ACTUALLY MAKE MONEY at it! Now I have a way to get some funds for reason #3...

3. I am a Coin Collector - I love rare coins. There is nothing more satisfying than acquiring a key date coin. I'm not talking about an unattainable 1913 Liberty Nickel - I'm talking about scarce coins like a 1909S VDB Lincoln (current cost in XF, approx. 282 40%ers) , '37D 3-legged Buffalo (235 40%ers), or an 1893S Morgan dollar (941 40%ers). CRHing has given me a way to get money to buy some coins that I would never be able to afford (or feel guilty spending $ on that could feed my children).

4. Building Sets from Circulation - it's a fun challenge to put together a set entirely from circulation at face value. I am currently working on a set of Wheats, Jeffs, Silver Roosies, Franklins, and Kens (including proofs) all at face value.

5. Outsmarting People - ya, I know this is a little odd, but I do gain a little satisfaction from swiping silver right out from under unsuspecting tellers' noses. I went to a bank the other day to buy some halves. The teller had a silver Washington in his tray. I tried to buy it but he said he was saving it cuz it was silver. He then went to the vault and got 10 rolls of CWRed halves for me... they gave up 12 40%ers. He had no clue what was right there in his own vault. I also love the competition. I know there are other CRHers in my town. I walked into a bank with $500 in halves to dump the other day and 2 seconds later a guy walks in behind me with a bag of halves of his own. Just gave him a nod that said, "Bring it on, byatch. I found more silver than you this week!"

Thanks for all the responses. If I had to re-title this I would say "What addicts you roll hunting"....definitely seems to bee the thrill of the hunt!

Happy Hunting to everyone!

History , history repeats itself. Throughout history printing money leads to inflation . During inflation gold and silver tend to go up. As they say " do the math "

I also echo the above posts.

It's the thrill of the hunt!

I relate it to the first time I chipped in from off the green at a golf course in Indiana. I was hooked!

Now, with my first two 40% Kens sitting in front of me, I eagerly await my "bank hopping expedition" on Monday and Tuesday. Not to mention my first two $500 boxes on Wednesday!

Will I strike it rich, probably not. But there's always that chance!

I like to think of it as "face value coin collecting"

I inherited a collection from my father that needed updating. Rather than pay retail, I am willing to search boxes from the coins I am missing.

Silver is also very nice, but it is the thrill of a treasure hunt that I like!

Fiat currencies aren't going anywhere!

As for the thrill it can be best explained and understood by those who gamble. The same high gets achieved as when i gambled but with less downside. My first high is a new bank, my second high is them actually having halves and my third and final high is SILVER , the sight and the sound , oh that sweet sound.

I started years ago. Somewhere around in the 70's. I have a very n ice collection back in the 80's but fell on hard times and i had to sell my collection. I gotten back into collecting again around 10 yrs ago with the coins that I have found detecting. I started CRH a little over a year just wish I would have gotten in it earlyer when there was more silver out there to find. I do it to past the time and to get my 8 yr old intested in coins and to make sure she will have a small nest egg when she gets older......Matt

I bet you threw back 40%ers back then eh?
