Why do people throw pull tabs in the nature?

Because they Can

If you find pull tabs like the one below (not attached to can, of course) and they are separate and the tab part is in a curved position, it was because, you could separate the tab from the ring part, then bend the tab part into a semi circle. You could hook the small end of the tab into the indentation of the ring part, hold on to the larger part of the tab and pull back on the ring and could shoot the ring part for about 50 feet or more like a Frisbee. The tab part acted like a spring. Lots of fun, until they stopped making this type and then the fun was all over.

Remember Pull tab Belts, Vests, Stringers etc,
made from Wrapping the Tongues to the tabs at Bush Parties ?

I thought for sure Someone woulld have a pic on the net of those days but :dontknow:

This is not an excuse, for today, I would never throw the pull tabs. But back in the days, it was different, a much different world.
Perhaps it was I was a young, often stupid kid who knew little restraint.........but it seems most everybody simply threw them where they were......we did many things different; that today people would horrible, lazy or some crime against the god of nature.
No, times were different, we used lead in our gas, no bottle or can deposit to worry about and so the bottles and cans were too often thrown out the window (DWI was not an issue then)......
And so it is we now reap what we have sown, grown wiser and hope to not repeat our mistakes.........my apologies to all.

No apology from Me. what I did when I was younger never hurt anyone.

I was never the type to regularly throw trash out the windows of my cars.
My vehicles floors proved that :tongue3: no I was not & am not an enviro....
I just never did it. & still fill my vehicle floors till I hit the Car wash.

When pull tabs had tongues that come off of cans, Yes I threw them down,
except at bush parties where the girls wanted them for making Stringers etc.
again No apologies from me. as far as I'm aware nobody died from it & now we all
benefit from learning their history & one more dig :icon_thumleft:

I sometimes kneel on the ground , after pulling out another tab out of the ground , shake my head and wonder why ?

We humans haven't really grown up yet as a species. Sometimes I wonder if we never will.

Yup.

Not littering is actually a recent thing.

Most everyone threw crap out the car windows, flipped beer caps (they do flip), discarded pop tabs, and such in the old days.

About 1950s - 60s the anti-littering thing started; it had a lot of resistance, sort of the same as anti-recycling or actually even the global climate change thing. Same sort of grousing, rationalizations, and denials. Must be a personality quirk.

I'm really happy the outdoors is improving. Slowly.

although I don't litter , I am anti-recycling. sorry but the more we recycle,
the more we will have to pay to recycle.
Right now you need to pay to recycle tires,
you get paid to recycle copper.
Eventually IF everyone recycled Aluminum & copper,
they will start charging at drop offs.

beware trusting recycling, I don't

I think they are caring individuals who want to always make certain that we detectorist have enough "foolers" in the sand & dirt to help us finely hone our detecting skills. I also think they throw them out there to continually provide the ultimate challenge to detector engineers, this to further insure that we detectorist continue to see groundbreaking advances in the technologies surrounding our beloved hobby. And last but not least involves target recovery skills. A deep pull tab in the churning surf can easily turn into a runaway minnow once it is lifted from the sandy abyss, the skills in capturing it often requiring cat-like reflexes and predator instincts. My last outing in the surf netted me several such pull tabs, further instilling within my personal level of confidence that I must be doing something right. After all, "I found several of them and they didn't get away!"

Jeff...you might want to check around. In my area I have two options when it comes to recycling and neither costs me money. I can take pretty much everything (paper, steel, aluminum, plastic, glass) to a recycling place where they accept it for free. My other option, which I usually use, is to separate out the metals and sell them at a scrap yard. Everything else goes to the first place I mentioned. I live in a rural area where trash pickup is available but costs money plus I would have to carry the trash can to the end of our mile-long private road. It's easier for me to just take things to the recycler once a month.

I have been fortunate enough to have lived in a few states here and can tell you this: this problem is NOT exclusive to any one area of the country. It is simply a lack of character.

Remember the old commercial were the Native American comes a cross garbage on side the high way
and a tear comes from his eye
that prevented 99 percent of me from littering after seeing that the other one percent is when I'm out detecting and your picking up other people rubbish
come to think of it
that's just about time businesses stated to go over sea's and do the damage that we see now over there.... should post that add over there

I gotta admit I hated doing it at first, but now it's a habit. We have finite resources, so the more we recycle the longer we can keep going. It just makes sense. I hate seeing old tires in the woods. They even hatch mosquitoes. :BangHead:

I wear clothes made from recycled soda bottles, and they keep me warm and dry. In fact, I had no idea they were recycled until I found out by accident. They are my clothes of choice.

You can still make money on aluminum and especially copper. There's actually a market now for recycled material. It's all about creating the market so that the costs can be kept down. It should be more economical to reuse aluminum than to mine and create it in the first place.

Recycling also tends to keep can slaw out of our environment, and that's a good thing!

Well to me it's lack of respect to the land owner.
Yeah I smoke, but the butts go in my back pocket if I'm out and about. Could be part Boy Scout, or my growing up on a farm.

I once at our shop saw a young "Lady" drop her Mickey D's bag and cup out the side window of her car while her boyfriend/hubby was inside. They were parked in front of the garbage can by the door.
I picked up the stuff and handed it back to her. Told her "Miss you dropped this, if it's trash it goes in the can, not the ground" Little miss got all huffy and stormed to the garbage can, saying "What's it your business what I do?" Simply told her, "You are at my business and on my property, so I have all the business to tell you what to do with your trash"

She really needed a Gibb's head slap, but I refrained.

Mark, Yeah recycling has me scratching my head. Dang straw gets itchy. But I do understand the premise of it, what I don't get is our recycling used to be picked up in a truck that had separate compartments for items, now it's picked up by a regular old garbage truck....
Wonder where it ends up?
