Hi

I'm always asking myself why on earth people rip off pulltabs, old or newer, and throw them anywhere but in a trash bin.

It's something I just do not understand.

I can't think of a GOOD reason to do so, plus the fact that the newer square tabs are made to stay attached to the can after opening.

If someone happens to know, well just chime in !

not to mention, pulling the tabs off, impedes with the drinking of said beverage.

Hey, is that flag german or belgian? I forget.

When I was young the pull tabs were meant to come off, my buddies and I would flick them with our fingers to make them fly. Before all the electronic gadgetry of today, we were always looking for something to keep us entertained.

When the new cans came out, we took offense to the "adults" that were trying to keep the pull tabs on the can, so like the little punks that we were, they would get pulled off and flicked.

I apologize for my boyhood mischief, too bad pull tab littering was the least of our "crimes".

The same reason smoker's throw their butts to the ground - toooo lazy to get rid of them properly Olegrumpy!

No excuse, why do they throw their fast food bags out of their car window? Or their beer bottles and soda cans... no respect for anyone but themselves, that's why.

Belgian, my friend !

The flicking thing is an intersting story and a good clue as far as the beavertails are concerned.

The mistery remains regarding the newer square tabs.

I've been hunting the same beaches here for 20 years now. After a couple of years, I was so crazymadannoyed to find those beavertails on a very productive part of the beaches that I decides to spend some outings removing them (had a spectrum XLT at the time). Removed 716 of them in less than 10 hours. There remain almost 10x the same amount at the same place, something like 17 years later. I dig a doezn of them at each visit ! Unbelievable !.

It is true, though, that people tend to be extremely careless when they have to dispose of some trash in the great outdoors.

A real shame, and a nuisance for us detectorists !!

Belgian, my friend !
I should have known. I lived in Kortrijk for 7 months back in the late 90's.

We humans haven't really grown up yet as a species. Sometimes I wonder if we never will. Too many use the reasoning that "the world is huge and my one little piece of trash won't hurt". That "logic" caused most public areas to be covered with pull tabs and other bits of garbage. It also resulted in a huge area in the middle of the Pacific Ocean being covered with plastic bottles and other floating garbage. It's a sad reflection on us that everywhere we humans go we leave behind our trash. I've been hiking miles away from any town and found discarded plastic water bottles and aluminum cans. It's a shame but it's true.

I guess the same reason they throw their garbage on the beech with a garbage can 10 feet away, just plain lazy.:icon_scratch:

I'll tell ya one thing it's pretty obvious why they got rid of the rip off tabs!

If you find pull tabs like the one below (not attached to can, of course) and they are separate and the tab part is in a curved position, it was because, you could separate the tab from the ring part, then bend the tab part into a semi circle. You could hook the small end of the tab into the indentation of the ring part, hold on to the larger part of the tab and pull back on the ring and could shoot the ring part for about 50 feet or more like a Frisbee. The tab part acted like a spring. Lots of fun, until they stopped making this type and then the fun was all over.

You know on the subject matter of throwing anything on the ground. I travel quite a bit and I see the country side as well, and of course you see beer bottles and what nots just thrown down. So it got me to thinking, that back in the days when people traveled by horse, foot, or even by car they most likely did what many do today, just discard it on the ground!!!!
