California Assembly approves student aid for illegal immigrants
The state Assembly voted today to send Gov. Jerry Brown a bill that allows undocumented immigrant college students to receive publicly-funded financial aid.

After a lengthy debate, Assembly Bill 131 -- the second part of the controversial measure known as the California Dream Act -- cleared the lower house on a 45-27 vote.

"Today is a wonderful day," said Assemblyman Manuel Perez, D-Coachella. "Today is a day of hope. Today, there are many students throughout the state of California who are saying, 'It's about time.'"

Republicans didn't see it that way.

They argued that giving taxpayer-funded scholarships to students who are in the country illegally will encourage more immigrants to come to the state without authorization. They also said it doesn't make sense to subsidize the education of students who aren't allowed to legally work after they graduate.

"If we're going to invest in those students we should get some return on the investment when they leave school and go into the workforce," said Assemblyman Curt Hagman, R-Chino Hills.

The Assembly approved amendments made in the Senate, intended to address the bill's costs by narrowing eligibility and delaying implementation until 2013. Those are provisions Gov. Jerry Brown had sought.

The governor signed the first piece of the so-called Dream Act in July, which allows undocumented immigrant students access to private financial aid. He said then that he planned to "look very favorably upon" its companion bill, the one the Assembly approved today.

They ought to let all legal students who pass high school with a c or better average continue on to a college education if they so desire the education. After mid school it should be an option to go to work, get some of the students out and working then they just might want to learn once they get to high school. All I could think about in my first 3 years of high school was girls and guns. Not until after graduating did I really come to and want to learn. There might be something to making smart decisions and being over 21, they say your not really capable mentally to even drink prior to 21 so it only makes sense to me that you would learn more and crave to learn around that age. I remember at least half the students in class were social talking and planning the rest of there day, could have cared less about the shit the teachers were pushing on us. IMO

will they apply this mining claims?

Fire Protection Fee Reintroduced Take Action!

Urge a NO Vote on ABX1 24 & SBX1 7

Take Action to stop ABX1 24 (Blumenfield, D-Los Angeles) and SBX1 7 (Budget Committee) relating to fire protection fees. Earlier this year, a $150 fire prevention fee was passed as a part of the budget negotiations, however the Governor asked for additional language to address future funding of CAL FIRE.
These two pieces of legislation change the purpose of the fee from "prevention" to "protection," allowing CAL FIRE to receive a portion of the funding. The fee has also been changed from $150 per homeowner to the following:

$1.00 per acre for the first 100 contiguous acres;
$0.50 per acre for the next 900 contiguous acres;
$0.25 per acre for each additional acre not to exceed a total of $3,000 for 10,000 acres or more owned;
$175 for one building or structure and $25 for each subsequent building or structure on land owned.
In essence, this new fee changes the purpose of the previously enacted law, just two months ago, from fire prevention to fire suppression in the SRA. These bills impose an outrageous new tax on rural Californians to backfill for an arbitrary reduction in General Fund financing.

The proposed SRA fees are extremely unfair to rural residents since they will end up shouldering a large portion of total fees paid to CAL FIRE, when it actually costs much more to prevent or contain a fire in urbanized areas compared to a fire in a rural area.

Stop this double taxation - urge your legislators to vote NO on ABX1 24 and SBX1 7!

Nothing would surpise me, :angry4: would have to get my moneys worth :evil6:

OK- here's who voted for or against it and those who didn't even vote. I suggest calling yours to let him/her know how their vote influenced your vote next election.
BTW- This isn't just California. There is a Federal version of this bill that they have been trying to pass for 10 years. Napolitano is supporting it regardless of the current vote:

Personally I think we need to take care of ourselves first and think civil service should be mandatory for anyone seeking educational assistance (read: doctors, lawyers etc.)

Ahhhhhhhh Chit.......this suks!!! What happened to this country???

Rafters, kayakers and canoeists have a new way to get into the Mokelumne River.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management opened the new access point Monday along Highway 49. It provides a safe boat-launch point and parking lot for 18 vehicles where boaters previously trespassed and risked vehicle accidents.

Called the Big Bar Launch, the new facility includes restrooms and interpretive signs. It cost $1.4 million and was funded by the California Department of Boating and Waterways and money paid by Pacific Gas & Electric Co. as part of settlement terms to obtain a new federal operating license for its hydroelectric facilities on the river.

The BLM obtained a 50-year lease to the riverfront parcel from three adjoining property owners. Boaters previously had trespassed on their land and risked parking on the shoulder of Highway 49 to reach the river.

"It's a much better deal for both the adjacent property owners and the public that wants to use the river," said BLM spokesman David Christy. "I think it will be a great addition to the river."

Compared to upstream reaches that contain rapids, the new put-in provides access to water that is calmer and suitable for boaters of all skill levels.

The new parking area is located where the river crosses Highway 49, on the border of Amador and Calaveras counties, and can be reached with a right turn while traveling either direction on the highway.

For more information, call the BLM's Mother Lode Field Office at (916) 941-3101.
