I ran some air tests in my yard today with my CTX to see how it responded to depth, sound, and number. Here are the results:

Settings:

Coil: 17 inch
Sensitivity: 26
Pattern: All metal but last line
Tone: Combined
Deep on
Seawater on
Pitch long
Speaker - no headphones.

Findings:

Mens 10k Gold band: 16 inches
Mens 14k thin white gold band: 14 inches
Womens 14k White gold wedding band: 8-9 inches
Tungsten Junk Ring Mens Wedding Band: 17 inches
Wheat Penny: 15 inches
1oz silver bullet: 11 inches
Silver nickel: 13 inches
Regular nickel: 13 inches
Quarter: 16 inches
Silver ring: 14 inches

Picture of items. All of these are finds of mine except the silver 1oz bullet:

edit: Oh, the most interesting find...that gold 10k band kept ringing up as 12.36/12.37/12.38...

I think FBS2 does much better than FBS on air tests. The Etrac doesn't seem to as well in air sometimes as it does in the ground.

Very nice. I wonder if those numbers would be comparable in the field? Was the target ID accurate all the way out for the air tests?

No I doubt it. Each type of soil, even different parts of the beach, are going to affect depth and response differently. Numbers reacted the same as the do in the field...changing but staying in the same general area.

For my area, I have noticed that many targets I find that are deep will be repeatable until I remove the soil. At that time, I may not hear it in motion mode. Pinpoint only.

From this I have deduced that the machine may need the soil to 'conduct' the signal, since it is not conducted in air as well.

I only have 6 months on the CTX, but I now take this as normal operation. These are usually deep coins found on edge, and the center of the target 'shifts' as I remove soil and I end up finding the target in the side/bottom corner of the hole.

Anyone else see this behavior?

You are correct, the FBS2 air tests much better than the original FBS...

Yes. I experience this with the CTX.
