I have a silver spoon that comes from my Great Great Grandfather who bought it for his wife for their 25th wedding anniversary and lived in New York.(We believe he had them custom made/bought locally) It is somewhere from the mid to late 1800s most likely.(Very early 1900s at latest.) It does not say the company that made it, but it has the initials MED, the symbol of a Crown, a Shield, and a Lion, followed by the word sterling on it. I couldn't upload pictures of the symbols because they are too small to focus. If anyone can provide any information regarding they're rarity or the company that made them I would be grateful. Thank You!

Need to have a pic of MED, the spoon in general and as close to the other marks as you can get.

A couple of hints. The lion, crown and shield sound English, but shouldn't have sterling written on it. The marks sound like Sheffield, but Sheffield marks denote silverplate. They also could be pseudosilver marks, used by silversmiths, usually in the US, to make it appear to be fine English sterling silver. Pseudomarks were primarily used on 90% coin silver in the US prior to the Comstock lode, the first native source of American silver, discovered in the 1870s. One thing you could check to get a rough idea of it's age, is to look at the place where the bowl meets the handle. If it has a distinct join, then the spoon was probably made before the 1870s. However, you do need to post some sort of picture, otherwise we can only speculate on any ID.
