Hey guys, I have a couple question here and I'm hoping that some of you guys can chip in with your opinions. I've read so many great things about the M6 lately and it's really starting to grab my attention. However, what kind of depth can one expect to get out of this machine. I know, I know, this is impossible to answer exactly, but if I were in average ground swinging at an average speed on an average day, how would it perform? Also, about the MXT, can somebody tell me how the single tone affects coin hunting? Is it still relatively easy?
Thanks to all and happy hunting!

I own both the MXT Pro as well as the M6 and here ie the deal. The MXT is no more powerful except it has relic a mode a lit VDI and a threshold control. They both basically can locare US Quarter at 10" all day long and have the same electronics and function at 14-15khz.

The MXT Pro has a 12" coil will go deeper than the 950 on the M6 but I have found the need to lower its sensitivity to keep it stable so they end up equal.

Honestly the M6 is lighter, simpler, more consistent machine than the MXT or MXT Pro

Feel free to message me - I know the M6 inside out ............... which surprisingly doesn't take much!

ok I am now out of bed typing on a PC. I don't own and MXT but rather an MXT Pro, so I can't tell you honestly anything about the MXT. I do know though that all three function on the same electronics platform and the only major differences being features. This is credible though, as numerous people do this seriously for hours and hours every week. So while we may feel that a specific feature being trivial to us, could really be making a significant difference to someone else. Now that said, the MXT Pro and M6 will both locate US pennies at 7-8 inches all day set properly and have personally had quarters blow my ears off with the M6 at 10+ inches ..... yes really.

The one that makes these favorites is that they REALLY do perform in WET SAND yes really ! Switch the toggle on the right of the control box to "SAND" or "Salt" and pump the coil up and down slowly until the noise nearly disappears / IT IS GROUNDED! it will honestly detect in the wet sand without falsing. The M6 will false less and run smoother though and is a pound less than the MXT, basically there are no real answers. I did tell you differences about each, but really that is I it. For Beaches....M6 - Light, stable, Powerful consistent, 950 coil great for trashy beaches. Inland / relics stc................... MXT Pro -, , deep 12" coil, lit VDI great for woods, relic mode with VDI that states "BUTTON" "BUCKLE" etc even a prospect mode!

The threshold is why I chose the MXT over the M6, the M6 is a silent search detector where the MXT has an adjustable threshold. The M6 has to break the threshold to hear the target where the MXT you can hear those whisper targets a little easier as the target doesn't have to break the threshold and you can hear a change in the threshold on those really deep targets that just can't pick up good enough to break the threshold. The single tone is only really going to matter when cherry picking targets you'll have to look at the VDI where the MXTpro or M6 has multi tone so the silver will be a higher tone and you won't have to look as much for a VDI when cherry picking silver coins. That being said once you get those really deep whisper targets a lot of them won't VDI like normal as if the detector is barely able to pick them up then its not going to VDI them correctly, I dig up silver dimes at 9 to 10" that VDI at 40 to 50 when they usually would be 80 but once you get used to those deep whisper targets you'll dig them every time and yes its still easy to coin shoot and I wouldn't trade my MXT for two of any other detector out there. With the D2 coil I can get dimes at 10"+ and have found a few at 12" before. HH

Thank you both very much! This is starting to sound very appealing...

Yeah there's no bad choice - they're both killer machines ....... I just can't figure out which one is my "back up" LOL

I have the original MXT and the main advantage over the M6 in my mind is the prospecting mode. If you know you'll never need that, the m6 is just fine especially for coin shooting/jewelry hunting in parks, fair grounds etc. You'll do well with either.

I like my MXT so much, I use a Minelab as a backup! :notworthy:

Treasurecoasteric-
Question for you. Seems like you have the experience/ time with both machines, if you had to pick which one would you take?

But how dopes it compare to the MX5???

I'd go for the M6 or MXT as they are built like a tank, just something about having a metal box to house the electronics makes me feel better. HH

Yeah, an people say they last FOREVER

If you don't need threshold or a relic mode, save $200-$300 and get the M6
They are equally as powerful and I actually feel that the 950 coil that comes with the M6 is an awesome coil too.
The M6 is lighter as well and I have heard of people literally using M6's for YEARS.

Thanks for the advice :)

I've had the MXT, gave it to my in laws to get him started in the sport. Bought a F75 limited. Love it though it takes time and hours using. But I own an M6 too and Its a good machine. I run disc. below default and when possible sens. past default. You can get use to it. Its deep enough. The national average for coins in parks is 6" or less so your covered there. I know, some will say you miss the deep stuff. with the settings right, you can get the deep stuff with the M6. I even use the 6X10 coil and it makes a great combo and it is built like a tank. I like the Whites and the Fisher products. I've even got the AT Pro which I really like too. Got a 5X8 coming for it tomorrow. Good luck guys.

I previously had an MXT and sold it mainly because of the single tone. I just prefer multi tone machines. Then I had an M6 I picked up cheap used and loved it but then sold it to a relative to help him get started detecting. They are very simple to operate "turn the knobs and go" type machines. No digital menus to deal with. I eventually replaced the M6 with a new/demo MXT Pro and of course really like that one. I don't have a lot of hours on it but I have been hitting some coins around 7 inches easily. A couple were iffy so I just temporarily cranked up the Gain to check it to get a good reading. One thing that irritated me was how I somehow managed to bump the knobs when I put the machine down to dig. In my opinion they turn too easily. I think some people have put O-rings under knobs to help increase the friction needed to turn the knobs. I used the Delta water faucet rubber seals under the MXT Pro knobs (pull straight off) and they seem to work just perfect. I just put the flexible side of the seals toward the nuts.

I try to run the gain at +2 as long as it isn't to noisy, which most places I can run at +2 with no problem, any higher it gets a little too noisy to hear those whisper targets. I can get dimes at 10"+ with no problem and have had a few at 12" before with the D2 coil, the coil is going to depend on how deep you can detect, you won't be getting those 10"+ dimes with the 6x10 coil. HH
