My brother told me today he wants to buy a MD. His budget is less than $400.00, hopefully $350.00 or less. He already knows he will need a PP, which will take $125.00 of his budget. So that leaves him at $225 to $250 left for a MD.

He lives at North Myrtle Beach, S.C. His primary hunting grounds will be beaches. So he needs something that will GB on beaches.

I'm thinking the new Tesoro Mojave at around $250.00 and a Makro PP at $125.00.

Please give me your opinions on this and suggestions. Being that I also am new to (40 days) this hobby, and self-questioning my judgement on my first two detectors, I need some help to direct my baby brother onto his path to success.

The Teknetics Eurotrk Pro is very well regarded and is a bit over $200.

Rick, thanks for your reply. Do you know if it's well regarded for beach sand, wet or dry?

Fisher F-22? (Very much line the Teknetics Euroteck Pro)

Though I think the Tesoro Mojave is a fool-proof detector.

For wet sand salt water beach hunting he'll have to postpone detecting until he can get a better machine more suited to that type of hunting. If he can settle for hunting the dry sand right now, just about any detector that's been mentioned (and many others) will do the job, but, wet salt sand and water will give single frequency VLF machines fits. Keep in mind that he'll also need a sand scoop too. For dry sand, a cheaper one will work ok for a while. Wet sand will need a top quality scoop. Those can run into hundreds of dollars.

By PP I assume you to mean Pin Pointer? I would put everything towards the metal detector and get the pin pointer later. He can always wave a handful of sand in front of the coil until he can afford the PP. Many diggers (like me) don't even use them.

Minelab Sovereign GT is top machine for the beach. You might be able to pick up a used one somewhere. Recommend you/he go through the "Beach and shallow water" forum of TN to read up on what machines that are favored for the beach.

You don't use a pinpointer in beach sand, you use a sand scoop. In DRY sand a Tesoro Compadre will get the job done, as will a Garrett Ace 250. In the wet saltwater sand, you really need a multi-frequency or Pulse Induction machine (least expensive new $600.00 Tesoro Sand Shark). :skullflag:

that's one reason I love beach hunting so much, a scoop is soooo much easier than digging

Okay guys, thanks for your comments.

For the beach a pin pointer isn't necessary. But a multi-frequency machine is usually the best choice.
Good luck with your choices.
Sovereign GT is a great detector for beach hunting. Find one used..
