Which detector for a newbie.

Good post! Because I was going to ask the same thing. It came with a coil cover and I was wondering if that impede the signal when using it? Should it be used? Is it only for when you store it? Inquiring minds want to know.

Also, here in Missouri, there’s a lot of clay where I live and I was looking at the Excalibur shovel. Is it sturdy enough for dense clay?

I’m assuming what came with it is the exact shape of the coil, made from hard plastic and only a couple mm think? If yes and it came with it, yeah, I’d use it. The MD scans into 12” of dirt. 2mm of plastic won’t make a significant difference.

I was looking at the Simplex for starting out or the Garrett Apex. Which one do you think is the better to start out with or should I go with an ace 300 or 400?
Just get yourself a Minelab Equinox 600 and call it a day. You won't regret it. Easy to learn and you will get many years of detecting out of it.
