Well.....the shipwreck treasure is 35 miles out and 50 feet deep. The entire area is National Marine Sanctuary, which means anywhere in the water you could have your detector confiscated...or worse.
For lost tourist "treasure" you might try Smathers Beach (near the airport) which is one of two public beaches on Key West. The other is the State Park beach which is much nicer (and natural!) BUT, it is a State Park, I don't know if you can detect there legally.
I'm sure you'll have a ball there anyway, it's hard not to love Key Wierd. Um, also, at the Gulf of Mexico end of Duval Street is the Pier House beach....small, artificial and private, but just tell the parking attendent you're having lunch at the Beach Bar and you can park for free and check the place out, the grounds and amenities are really nice, get a cocktail and flop on a beach chair and cool off....Uh, also the beach is "tops optional" so its often very scenic. I was a lifeguard there for two years, often distracted. Have fun!

Going to Key West in a few weeks, anyone know where I can detect in the water?

Or have any suggestions on beach sites?

I know most of the Keys are a preserve and of course the Fisher sites are off limits.

Does anyone know of a chart that shows the boundaries of the preserve and the Fisher sites?

I wouldn't detect in Florida right now because there is "hot issues" regarding metal detecting in the water and you can pay the consequences. There is a lots commercial salvage company hunting for those shipwreck's treasure to any price and the Florida government is regulating and improving the rules against them, so "be careful" whatever you do in Key West.

Thanks everybody for your responses, I guess I'll just stick to dry land at some of the "optional" beaches!
