Where are the Button GURU's????? HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!

Did some detecting at a friends house, built in 1880, and found this button at about 5 inches deep. I have done some research, but have not found out where it may have been made, or when, and what it might have been used on. Can any of you button Guru's nail this one down? It says "DOUBLE GILT" on the top outer rim, then it has two stars on opposing sides in the center, and the word "BEST" on the lower center of the back of the button. With a very high powered microscope, I can see what appears to be some gold plating, in the deepest pores of the lettering.

Can anyone tell me when and where this button may have been made and what it would have been used for? The area where I found it, would have had Civil War troops moving through this area during that period. Thanks for any help.

Just an early 1800s flat button and what you read on the back is basically just a mark stating it was of good quality. There's few buttons in which the design on the back makes them a real keeper. ( and they are almost always political)

IP's right on. I'll go ahead and add , It's a civilian button, more than likely British made and dates about 1800 to 1820's or so. A lot of these are dug in civil war camps. Both US & CS camps I've also dug them at later sites. They had evidently been saved for years and used to replace buttons that were lost.

Yeppers, the fellows are right-on the ID of your button. Our CSA boys were so poor they couldn't even pay attention, :laughing7: so they often used flat buttons (also called 'coin buttons') on their uniforms. Nice find, Breezie
