When did all of you notice the hobby of metal detecting start gaining interest

I’m guessing late 60s or early 70s, there’s so much information and education that you learn from this hobby. Gee I’m jealous because they probably had what I call a field day finding stuff, meaning more service finds, had to be exciting indeed.
My question is what’s going to be considered rare now or in the future, fact is nobody is losing rare or history things. Yes please your opinions appreciated.

They'll have metel detecting trips to Mars in space suits, for lb Gold nuggets!
 

I’m sure there’s something of interest there.
