Whatzit from an 1820's Homestead

I found this piece along with pewter spoon fragments and other early 1800's items. There were some later items found--in the way of suspender clips, etc.

The thicker end of the item appears to have been broken long ago. The "pointed" end is unbroken. I'm thinking I have seen something like this somewhere before, and I can't place the item.

Please help if you can.

Regards,

Possibly a piece of a decorative brass bit, for a horse..............

i agree with Edde looks like part of a decorative serpent or dragon motif ( head broke off )backplate to a musket

To me it looks like a pump handle of some sort. There is a lot of wear on the top of the circle, and a flat spot at the bottom of the tail.My guess is a serpent shaped pump handle minus the head :icon_jokercolor:

That's a good enough ID for me! I *knew* that it looked familiar--and as much as I've looked at guns and ammo to ID finds, I think that's right. Nice work, EDDE.
