What's worth more ?

Question what's worth more. Is it that impressive hammered gold coin I found the other week, or is it this rather dull looking hammered silver coin I found today. The head side is a lot better than the pictures and Say's the kings name Offa. Like the gold coin it needs to be straightened and cleaned. Please post answers to youluckysod.com.

It's one of the earliest hammered coins, Offa's reign was 757-796 AD. The head side is a little weakly struck but will look better when cleaned and the coin is straightened.

Re: What's worth more ?

The detail on the silver is amazing :o

And that you know of this King Offa, isn't that the value of the find? Some new piece of the past to help define a part of the world at a point in time?

Re: What's worth more ?

Not an everyday find ;D
i certainly have not seen a Offa coin before, Big congrats

Do you clean and straighten the coins, or do you have someone else do the work..ie: a museum

Re: What's worth more ?

I figure the silver is more valuble, or else you wouldn't have asked.

I was hoping, as I was scrolling down, that this was Coin Vs. Relic. Maybe Hammered Gold Vs. Papal Bulla. ;D

I've seen lots of Edwards, Charles's, Lizzies and Henrys but no Offa's. Cool coin.

Best Wishes,

Buckles

I can't believe you!

Please get it recorded with the fitwilliam Museum (EMC). I will give you a contact, they are deep in the middle of researching Offa for a fore coming book.

If he'd found an Offa GOLD coin, then it Truly would've been a Find of a Lifetime.

Hello crusader, just got an id on the coin from Mike Bonser (he will pass on the info to the fitz.). The coin is a portrait issue with celtic cross reverse, moneyer Pehtwald (c.780?-792), Spink 905. Over the years iv'e done well with saxon hammered, but to get a coin of Offa I'm still buzzing.

With more run of the mill hammered coins I would clean and straighten myself. Saxon coins though can be very fragile so they go to a pro.
